What's new

What was Afghanistan like in the 50's?

Yeah, you almost get a Madmen or a Pam Am feeling and atmosphere watching those pictures.But I have asked myself the same question: how representative are those photos out of the 50/60/70's from Afghanistan? Was it widespread or just a marginal phenomenon, only reserved for the elite in the big cities?

This is like one small group/area (not even all of Kabul) of Afghanistan, why not compare tribal areas?

This must be the Elite class of Afghanistan in 1950's.

Regardless, afghanistan was a secular and progressive society which believed in freedom. Women could wear as they liked and do as they pleased. It was completely destroyed due to the Taliban terrorist insurgency.

BS.

It was completely and utterly destroyed by the Soviet Invasion. Thank God USSR broke. It deserved it

Well you can say.. metropolitan class..Tribals are no measure of progress..as tribals around the world..no matter in Arabia, Afghanistan or Anadaman & Nicobar continue to remain and will remain as one of the most backwards people in the world. We all have seen the results of where Taliban Tribals have taken Afghanistan too and now turning their guns against Pakistan.

Actually..Soviet union was not all that bad.. much of the development you see in photos is credited to soviet union..shall we say...janglee islamist terrorist destroyed progressive Afganistan..and now we are paying heavy price of our mis calculated deeds to please the forigen forces out of our own indian obessions..its no secret that Pakistan considered Afghanistan as its backyard for an edge against India..

Warning: Video has a misleading title!

Your just ranting again... It was because of the Soviet invasion. Allowing the Mullahs to become proxies of a Superpower. Not to mention the selling points the Mullahs were able to use and were given to fight the Soviets.

Soviets = Godless Bastards
Soviets = Communist
Soviets = More Infidel culture
Soviets = etc

The Afghan King(s) and P.M.(s) didnt have an open rebellion before the Soviets came. There were only small pockets of resistance from Mullahs.

Not to sound like a extremist but maybe this modern(western) cultural is the reason for it's current situation in the first place.I mean women wearing skirts and showing their legs!(No offense to people outside my cultural or religious community)

How on earth can a woman wearing a skirt lead to extremist sentiment.

We should be tolerant and let anyone where whatever he or she pleases. This has nothing to do with it. Afghanistan was used as a battleground by the CIA and the Soviets to fight their war. CIA pumped 4 billion $ into what we called the mujahideen then and now call terrorists.

The US started and created terrorism in the world. How was it right to support these people then and how is it not right now?

Soviet Union actually marched in to supressed the rebellious mullahs + tribal alliance and put down their terrorist activities. Not that i am saying that Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in support of communist government was a good idea but we must talk factually.

if that is the case then what about Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, etc??

You probably didn't get my point.My point was based more on religious beliefs,so never mind.

We all know the elections in Egypt aren't going as planned(If you are following the news) and well Syria is pretty much in front of you.You and i both know the road they are headed down(i do hope for their good)
I also wish the best to the rest of the countries but i don't know crap about god's plans.

Looks much nicer .... The blame like Pakistan unfortunately in the end goes to Afghans every single one of them is responsible for the state of their nation , every second day is bringing more and more destruction to both these countries , Pakistan seems dragging towards Afghanistan and Afghanistan is becoming a bigger nightmare

One more thing in 50's Afghanistan was that it used to call almost all of Pakistan's territory as it's own. Baluchistan, FATA, KP, some parts of GB were considered to be Afghan land. They shouldn't have involve in such cr@p and things would have been much better in this region and for Afghanistan.

Pakistan had Afghanistan for a good 10 years after Soviet withdrawl and all we did was tried to turn it into our backyard for future war with India.. Now Afghanistan will re-surge back with American help and this time they wont make a land claim to above mentioned areas but people of those areas especially KP, GB and Baluchistan will revolt against Pakistan to join Afghanistan..the cards have turned against us and we just just have to wait, see and count the hours....Unless we do something radical to re-surge Pakistan back, rescue its reputation and build the strongest economy and bilateral trade in the region which seems difficult as the time is short...extremely short indeed...
