China Defense Minister Vows to Step up Bangladesh Ties

Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie on Wednesday met with the Chief of the Naval Staff of Bangladesh Sarwar Jahan Nizam, pledging to enhance the relation between the two nations and respective armed forces.
"The Chinese side will work together with the Bangladeshi side to continuously advance the comprehensive partnership of cooperation between China and Bangladesh featuring lasting friendship, equality and mutual benefits," Liang told Nizam.

Liang, also a State Councilor, hailed the deep and traditional friendship between the two nations, saying China had always considered Bangladesh a trustworthy friend and brother.

The Chinese People's Liberation Army attached great importance to developing friendly and cooperative ties with the armed forces of Bangladesh, including the navy, he said, adding the two sides had developed cooperation at various levels and in many fields in recent years.

Nizam said Bangladesh appreciated China's support in the country's national and military construction, adding it would firmly support China on the Taiwan and Tibet issues.

No, First place would go to Pakistan, that is a fact.

But all in all, it is good to have good relations with close nations. This is good for Bangladesh.

What Bangladesh should seek is to make our port in Chittagong similar to the Gwadar facility and also in Mongla a deep sea port is required which can both be achieved through Chinese assistance. China has already agreed to help on nuclear energy and on connecting both countries through a road system through Myanmar. On top of these we procure most of our weapons and armaments from China but what we should be doing is building our own defense infrastructure in collaboration with China as Pakistan has been doing for quite some time now. This would allow us to export arms and equipment and may be we can eventually build our own missiles systems like Pakistan. This will help to create an industrial base for other parts of our economy. However, we should seek defense arrangements with other countries as well especially on the technologically superior end of things which is lacking in Bangladesh.

As you have mentioned the Chinese assistance is welcomed for Chittagong and Mongla. The Chinese might ask for something in return. If they ask for a naval base in those two ports. Are you going to be OK with that or you are going to be against this idea?.

Again u only see weapons and war rather than peace and economics Mr. Munshi.

What plagues BD more is smuggling, drugs and "nature" and not India.
Farmland growing only cash crops like opium and heroin rather than food crops.
Smuggling, drugs, money laundering have to be of utmost concern.
Rising sea levels will only increase those problems.

Build up a good economic base. Then worry about India.

not so sure about that Munshi, I doubt Bangladesh would want to antagonize India to that extent given our proximity.
Didn't Nepal once try something like that (like a road to china or whatever) back in the 80's or something and India cut them off for a year or two?

Well, I was trying to get a better understanding from a Bangladeshi point of view. Some people are sensitive in basing foreign troops on their home soil. There are many reasons like pride and sovereignty issues.

Iranians are ones that fits this description. They would not allow any foreign troops based on their soil even if it is in the interests of Iran.
