Taliban insurgents control about half of Afghanistan's district centers, the senior U.S. general said on Wednesday, indicating a rapidly deteriorating security situation.

Insecurity has been growing in Afghanistan in recent weeks, largely spurred by fighting in its provinces as U.S.-led foreign troops complete their withdrawal and the Taliban launch major offensives, taking districts and border crossings.

"Strategic momentum appears to be sort of with the Taliban," General Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters.

Milley said more than 200 of the 419 district centers were under Taliban control. Last month, he had said the Taliban controlled 81 district centers in Afghanistan.


While the insurgent group had not taken over any provincial capitals, they were putting pressure on the outskirts of half of them, he said.

The government has accused the Taliban of destroying hundreds of government buildings in 29 of the country's 34 provinces. The Taliban deny accusations of extensive destruction by their fighters.

Fifteen diplomatic missions and the NATO representative in Afghanistan urged the Taliban on Monday to halt its offensives just hours after the rival Afghan sides failed to agree on a ceasefire at a peace meeting in Doha.

Biden has set a formal end to the U.S. military mission in Afghanistan for Aug. 31 as he looks to disengage from a conflict that began after al Qaeda's attacks on the United States on Sept. 11, 2001.


Almost all U.S. troops, except those protecting the embassy in Kabul and airport, have left the country.

I think the General is being MODEST and BIASED, the Taliban control far more districts than what he said.

Its pretty much accurate, he never said Kabul controls the remaining half. Infact a little more than half is is with Taliban, 30% is contested and around 20% is with Kabul.

Every other day the Taliban capture a few districts, maybe the General is not updated! Saying that the thing that counts the most is that apart from Torkhan they control all the fuel and food supply land routes. Any remaining districts and all the major towns will not last the embargo for much longer. My view is that the Taliban now call the shots and have the upper hand.

They recaptured Gamsir today (it is shown as contested because there is a military base in the district which is still under Kabul regime) which fell to kabul regime 2 days earlier apart from that there is definately a stalemate. Taliban are consolidating their gains at the moment and kabul regime is at the offensive ( with little success only a few districts they were able to retake of which a couple fell back to taliban).

We will be able to get a better picture by Aug 31 when US troops complete their withdrawl.

IMO any peaceful settlement and for the dialogue to succed Ghani and his gang needs to be taken care of, otherwise the outcome will be decided on the battle field.
Ghani says he has a plan to recapture lost terrotory in 3-6 months sure Ghani and his dogs are betting on India, Indian is already involved but if its involvement increases than Pakistan will have to enter. My guess is it will be a long war becore calm.

How will the Indian supply line work? If no land routes are available to them it’s like the death at the arrival!

Pakistan should ensure by whatever means that there are no ANA controlled areas next to Pakistan's borders. Terrorists must be driven away.

Interesting how Zaranj on the Iranian border hadn’t fallen. What gives? This is considering so many districts all around it have fallen or are contested. Iranian support? Indian Support? The local warlord really wants to hold on to the border crossing revenue? Local tribal chief has a good relationship with the local ANA commander?

It’s maybe a situation where they have to consider whom they will be dealing with down the line, to try to get mining deals; either the Taliban or an Iranian backed entity.

Fell a week ago to Taliban. Ghaziabad district is the only new district that fell to Taliban which is in KUNAR ( this belt comprising of Nangahar Kunar Khost Paktia Paktikia etc are the places where TTP are given refuge and facilitated by NDS RAW nexus in terms of weapons training and finance). This region is very important.

TTP using Indian weapons and ammunition is a well known and documented fact, people tend to forget that.

This district has switched sides many times recently, Taliban have retaken it today again. Saying that the area you have identified is heavily fortified and mountainous. The population is pro-Pushtunistan and anti-Pak also. I think the Taliban will not put their resources there at the moment as they are probably overstretched, lets see you never know.
