In conversation with President Arif Alvi: ‘Pakistan’s fourth industrial revolution is here’

Dr Arif Alvi is an acquired taste. He isn’t your typical flash in the pan Pakistani politician who rides his 1,000-watt charisma to answer difficult questions. Instead, Alvi is that rare Pakistani leader whose substance overwhelms his style. He quotes ideas from Plato, Maulana Maududi, Karl Marx and Thomas Piketty with equal ease.

Even if you’re a resident of his former constituency in Karachi’s Defence area, you might not know that he was shot twice while protesting against Ayub Khan’s military rule.
I got the opportunity to interview the president over Eid at the Governor’s House in Karachi. We had a riveting, free-flowing conversation on everything from Artificial Intelligence (AI) to whether his talent is being wasted at the presidency.

One of the most profound causes he’s championing these days is how Pakistan can leapfrog ahead in the fourth industrial revolution by training Pakistani talent to take advantage of technological breakthroughs in AI, cloud computing and Blockchain. Ten thousand students are in process of mastering this technology in Pakistan as I write this.

It’s rare to see Pakistani leaders possessing a vision beyond the bread and butter of Pakistani politics. The seeds that the president is sowing today will pay dividends long after he leaves office, as the ‘Internet of Things’ explodes into a $300 billion market.

Even though his office is apolitical, after Asad Umar’s departure, Alvi is probably one of the most ideological members of the party in power today (he is the founding member of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf). In many ways, recent changes in Alvi’s life mirror the changes ‘Naya Pakistan’ is broadly offering to our emerging middle class: an influential seat at the table, a pivot away from the feudal mindset towards meritocracy, and a flicker of hope that our children’s future will be brighter than our past.

Because its the way forward if we went to rise up again but few people just want to troll. They dont want to compete the world and ridicule those who want to.

It's a continuation of the same one that was stopped by the 65 war.

Its not about the kaka babus its about us. Arent we the same lazy people ?

What we have done in our private companies ? Do we have any idea what is going around the world? Do you know that within 2 decades there will be complete change in the way goods are being produced and our most modern manufacturing companies are going to get absolete ?

4th industrial revolution is about artificial intelligence, deep learning, internet of things and block chain. Nobody seems to understand these in Pakistan but thise who are trying to inform us are being mocked.

Kindly have a research on 4th industrial revolution and its impact on us.

Half of the jobs will going to be obsolete.

lol..

Knew about them a decade ago, without any semi-conductor fab base and educational system in line with this, these are merely empty sologans.
Half of the jobs will going to be obsolete.
Nothing would be obsolete.
@ps3linux seems like what we were discussing yesterday is being discussed today also.

Without a good education system and no R&D, no manufacturing, no industries; this 4th Industrial Revolution talk is just talk only.

Who is stoping you to setup a private institute for training on designing and programing circuit boards ?

Why are you not doing on your own ? Why government has to do everything ? Arent we a capital economy ?

If you think that it is not going to effect job market then you are living in a dream world.

If a person in USA can cultivate a land of 50 hecter by using auto driven tractors and other machines which has live feed over growth and nutrition requirement of each individual plant (tech developed in israel) using drip irrigation against one hecter per person here in Pakistan then do u think we will be competent enough? Where will be income per person of our labor v/s a tech based supervisor?

Whatever you were talking about was limited to talking only whereas the world is in business of achieving. So just a simple request try to do something actual and if you cant then atleast dont mock others

There is plenty of man power already who knows this and is sitting idle.
I am talking about I.C fabrication, not printing boards.

At large scale and indivual can do jack shit. These things require very huge capital coupled with demand.
In Pakistan all AI,block chain and IOT is more of Govt project then personal because literally there is nothing to begin with.

Bot of them have huge R&D coupled with manufacturing base, have we got that in Pakistan?
With no R&D and manufacturing capability,we can do jackshit.
A country which has not even produced a single motor engine to date is going to jump into 4th Industrial revolution without having any true industry,R&D and manufacturing base when we look at Pakistani industrial capacity it looks more like that of late 60's then 2019.

I used to like Dr. Alvi until 5 minutes ago but then I read he was protesting against Ayub khan, the only guy who worked for Pakistan!! and made Pakistan so it can survive 20 years of corruption...now imgaine if we did not have Ayub and our politicians were as corrupt...where would Pakistan be today

Its a good FAD to talk about 4th industrial revolution, A.I and block chains, if people talk about they are considered upto date, I think I covered this part in our private discussion. But let me give you some further points to ponder about:
I am a finance/computer person through and through how seriously people will take me when I start talking about intricacies and latest developments in neurosurgery while knowing my professional background.

Few idiots from current ICAP management and bureaucracy have picked up these three jargon and started harping about them left and right first ICAP, which itself is living in the 2nd industrial revolution era, proponent of theory X and they talk about 4th I.R.

My company sponsored an event 2 weeks back where few key note speakers delivered their points this idiot from a big 4 audit firm comes up and delivers the same lecture which he gave to another one about 4 months back about 4 industrial revolution, A.I and block chains. All components were intellectual pirated from you tube and other website shamelessly, since I have had enough with this idiot I asked my team for few paid content question which are as below along answers:

Q1: Sir you have spoken about block chains and 4 industrial revolution, what impact do you think block chain implementation can have on Faisalabad textile exports.
Ans: Block chains are an important component of 4 industrial revolution and Faisalabad textiles can benefit significantly from their implementation.

Q2: Sir you talked about A.Is and their importance what do you think about A.I which pass turing test and those who donot?
Ans: Hmmmmmmmm, obviously this is an important test and we should opt for those A.I which certified by this test

Q3: Sir what role do you think widespread python education can have on A.I development in Pakistan?
Ans: Hmm actually I am not an IT expert.

GO figure it out. A dental surgeon talking about A.I, 4th Industrial revolution and block chains would be even more hilarious than the idiots in ICAP and bureaucracy.

So before manifacturing circuit board you want to manufacture IC?

Is 4th generation is just about IC manufacturing ? There r only handful of countries into IC manufacturing yet others r developing...

Brother i have a simple case. We as a nation are failing by complaining only. We dont want to work hard... there r nimerous example of people making a fortune without any sead money ...

Anyways lets agree to disagree ...

By the way 4th generation is less about hardware and more about programing ... better late then never ... we still have time to do the catchup
