There are two vines here ... one Pakistan which is consolidation of Muslim rule in South Asia, second, India which due to it's size and diversity is more akin to Europe. It has multiple languages and religions, cannot be a nation state but due to garbage in, garbage out paradigm, masquerades as a democracy. It is as much a democracy as Israel. Eventually, all its many peoples will break free and be relieved of the lies of their politicians and media. A country kept together by an unnerving fear of it's neighbors and coalescing them for common hatred pointing to a lack of anything tangible. If anything, India can be more like E.U. but that would be a giant leap because everyone at a very young age is fed heaps of phony nationalism. If I look back at history now it seems British rule was in a way good for South Asian Muslims, they had lost their way(sikh and hindu mutinies were changing the maps) and needed to consolidate and Pakistan is that vector. In this regard Pakistan is a victory of South Asian Muslims and defeat to it's foes.
For India, it will remain a game of qualified secularism and hindu fascism which again keeps people away from their most immediate concerns and in the meantime no one out of the two really ever can win outright due to the complexities of the region.
