Azerbaijan to Buy 24 JF17 Thunder Block 2 Aircraft from Pakistan

Mate, IAF flies SU30 and will have more experience in devising tactics and strategies suitable for Flanker. It doesnt make sense to me getting the same aircraft which the enemy flies already and that too in smaller numbers than the enemy, unless there is no other option (like F-7 even when India flew Mig-21). It doesn't give any edge. Now PAF has its options open.

It just so happens that the Su-35 + A-100 AEWACS combination is the most lethal air superiority platform in the world today. Something which even USAF doesn't have a direct answer for. The VLRAAM gives it an unparalleled advantage and it is a deadly opponent at WVR range. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Also, IAF flies SU-30 but the SU-35 is almost a new plane in terms of maintainability etc. And the Chinese J series benefits from the latest Chinese manufacturing techniques such as 3D printing, making it much more reliable.

J-10C is mainly used for multirole purpose.

If i was advocating for SU35, I would have brought up its strike capabilities as well as usefulness for PN. The VLRAAM could be a candidate for another PAF platform also, e.g. if PAF goes for J-31 or orientate in house project azm with VLRAAM. As for beating or joining, the adversary can be beaten with a next gen aircraft also, same type is not a complusion.

Depends what you call 'next gen', and whether 'next gen' actually exists or not. You think the Chinese will not upgrade J-16 with 'next gen' capabilities? Rest assured that features such as information fusion will find their way onto every single J platform. As for stealth, the Russians have been dealing with it in Syria and advances in Radar technology will make it lose its edge, sooner or later.

Considering that PAF has to support PA and PN, and not only cover attrition losses in case of war but also show up with numbers to take on a bigger enemy, up to 300 JF-17's.

Instead of Block-4, a new aircraft like the one projected in Project Azm should cater for being a bigger or stealthier aircraft. It should also carry ALCM(1 or 2) easily.

This just puts a Modified SU-27/30 (J-16) against MKI. Maybe acquire a different aircraft altogether.

It would be more suitable to replace mirages with an aircraft having a strike oriented role with bigger payload than JF-17. Replacing F-7 with JF-17 is enhancing the capabilities of that squadron multiple times.

It would also be beneficial to open a cosy diplomatic channel with USA and get hands on more F-16's side by side which can replace Mirage squadrons instantly.

Food for thought for those who want block-4 or another stealth bird.

MODS. There are at least 2 threads based on Azerbaijan's interest in JFT. Can-they be assimilated together please.

In fact, J-16 would be the best choice for PAF, if possible.

In the short term? Yes, but a better solution imo would be to just focus on Project Azm and keep churning out as many Thunders as possible until then (whilst also upgrading them along the way).

Purchasing large numbers of brand new 4th gen fighters we haven't used before is a little futile at this point, 5th gen is the future.

-thirdly, Block-1 and 2 will be upgraded to get closer to Block-3 standard.

I hope so.

There has been a need expressed by certain AF circles for a twin engined air craft for longer loitering time and sea based operations. This is where the requests to have J11 Series are coming from.

I think we should expand the facilities if the demand is going up instead of curtailing the business. Scaling up has its own advantage since many of these facilities can be shared with other projects like project Azm etc.

We should definitely scale up on block 3.
