India to provide 900 million dollars in aid to Nigeria : Africa World

Abuja - India will provide Nigeria with 900 million dollars in aid as part of an agreement reached during the visit of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Known as the Abuja Declaration: Strategic Partnership Between India and Nigeria, the agreement covers areas such as defence, agriculture, power generation, civil aviation and trade.

The donation underscored the outcome and importance of Singh's visit, said Ayo Olukanni, spokesman of Nigeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Singh had arrived Sunday and travelled on to South Africa Tuesday.

Olukanni said that the money would assist Nigeria in implementing the agreement within a short period.

Other areas of cooperation to be finalized within six months included lowering taxation on imports and promoting investment, science and technology, as well as plans to combat drug trafficking and an extradition treaty.

Olukanni said the visit was not just the usual symbolic diplomatic gesture, but that it was encapsulated in the adoption of the final document.

"The adoption of the declaration at the end of the visit reflects our commitment and determination for closer and deeper ties between our two countries," he said.

Olukanni said Singh's visit to Nigeria's parliament Monday was a due recognition of Nigeria's commitment to the ideals of democracy and the democratisation process.

Both countries also reaffirmed their commitment to work together to combat climate change through the UN. The countries also said they would support eachothers bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

"Nigeria reaffirmed its support for a permanent seat for India in the Security Council and India agreed to support and respect Africa's consensus with respect to a new permanent membership from Africa in the council," Olukanni said.

well that is 900m india could have spent on its own people (400m live under $1/day) nigeria is the most corrupt country in africa!

It is basically to grab a piece of Nigerian oil fields.

Yes, that it is!!

Nigeria better be in Indian pockets if we are to get our hands on the oil!! China is way ahead of us in this game as usual.

makes sense - hope u guys got it right

this is not aid. this is a $900M bribe to get nigerian oil.

hope it succeeds. otherwise its $900m down the drain

Oil? It makes a little sense. You want to kick on the stomach of Iran saying you dont want oil, and you want to go to Africa to bribe them?

Good strategy.

Why you fail to see the startegic correctness in this deal?

For some reasons i think Indians dont get the basic rights. No offence.

Energy requirements can be met with IPI, there is no reason to go to Nigeria, however i guess you can if you want to give away 900 million or so, and not spend for the benefit of your nation in regards to poverty.

Same goes with Arjun, LCA, and so on. Real waste of money.

IPI, 'P' stands for Pakistan, a state with which have fought 3 wars, and has a still running conflict. It doesnt require super inteligence to understand the stupididy in being dependant on gas that has to come thru that very state.

Its not 'give away', its to secure oil/gas and that will defnitly support and help our country men.

Thread crapping!!!

Hope India realises what she's getting in. Nigerian oil is concentrated around the Niger River Delta, a region thats fighting for autonomy and is a subject to more violance or even civil war in future.
BP-Shell already have problems safeguarding exisiting feelds, new fields can not be developped due violance and lack of infrastructure thats been destroyed over the years.

China secured oil in Sudan which will become a front line oil exporter within a decade. At the same time $100 billion is to be spent in Iran to develop new oil and gas field for Chinese market.

Ignoring Iran is biggest mistake India has made, you'll realise it soon. :coffee:

Indulging in Iran would mean adopting a confrontist apporach to uncle sam, which india wishes not to. India nor me wants India to do that and rather would be happy tryiong to secure oil fields in areas which are ignored.

Seems like Uncle Sam has already achieved what he wanted. ;)
If you have an indepedant foreign policy you should not be affraid to confront any other power, learn from Russia, France and China.
National interest before aliiance, thats how things are done.

keep trying to beat China, you already lost Myanmar, Sudan and Iran to China...other territories might follow.
