Self-Centred India

India’s nouveau riche are often, sadly, self-centred braggers who enjoy flaunting their wealth. It’s a reflection of a more general trend in India—as it grows and its wealth increases rapidly, it’s also becoming increasingly self-centred as a nation, lost in its own world and not bothering about its responsibilities and moral duty towards its neighbours, even when they’re in crisis.

Pakistan, for example, is facing its worst floods in living memory and the international media is full of stories of the large-scale devastation and massive death toll in flood affected parts of North West Frontier Province, Punjab and Sindh. Millions of lives have been affected by this epic natural disaster.

But while the international community and aid agencies pump aid to those affected, neighbouring India seems to be aloof and blind to the tragedy affecting Pakistan—I’ve yet (at the time of writing) to hear of any aid package for the victims from the Indian government. Meanwhile, the Indian media is barely giving the disaster the time of day, with news channels instead full of stories on the corruption wracking the Commonwealth Games.

Compare this with the United States and other Western nations, which are trying to mobilize resources domestically and internationally to assist the victims. This is obviously good politics—the Obama administration wants to win the trust of a Pakistani public that often sees the United States as working against their interests.

But as an immediate neighbour, India should also try winning the hearts and minds of the Pakistani people. As the largest country in South Asia, India needs to demonstrate big heartedness towards its smaller neighbour. After all, good ties with the neighbours will be a prerequisite if this country of a billion people wants to claim a leading position on the international stage.

The comfort of having a bit more money has made India an international conformist that doesn’t want to take risks. It’s an ironic contrast with the country’s pre-liberalization days, when a poor India was a leader of the Non-Aligned Movement.

An oppurtunist journalist trying to score some points. Indian aid is least likely to be accecpted and two countries officaly at enimity with each other cant express attitude better than this.

Nonesene article, India is giving the importance it deserves accorrding to our relationship status. We have already offered aid and Pakistan is yet to accept. About media not giving enough coverage, this idiot expect as to show full day programs or what? Even Pakistani's are more concered about Kashmir then flood.

Please stop access water in rivers for time being coming from India. Biggest help from India

From what I heard, the floods were more due to excess rains than any excess release of water. And even if there was excess water coming down from the glaciers, what is India supposed to with it? Divert it onto its own territory? Then you guys will be crying hoarse over India blocking your water.

Its a natural disaster and its shame to play a blame-game on it.

The Indian control rivers which are dry all the time coming from India and now full wow what a timing.

Must read
About 300 people in all of India.. I know.
I also know that the head of IRSA contacted his counterpart in India to ask him to co-ordinate water release to avoid flash floods in Lower Punjab and Sindh..
he was rebuffed with a simple "not our problem" line.

so now we are taking gossip as proof?:hitwall:

India a self centered country, really?

afghanistan given $1.5billion to reconstruct it self.
bangladesh handed out $1billion credit line.
srilankan tamil dominated area is specifically being developed by india, post ltte, India has so far committed $200million or more, the FTA we have with them is hugely in favor of SL.
bhutan quite literally lives off India.
burma since 1990's has been doled out 100s of millions of dollars for its development.
pakistan was given a good enough aid during the 2005 earth quake, our friends there removed the "made in india" tag and in most cases let the whole thing rot, recently india has again offered multiple millions of dollars as aid but yes it is our fault the GoP turns a blind eye to it.
each year India hands out over a billion dollar aid to friendly countries across the african continent, the tele medicine and tele education today connects 23 countries of africa with india and the attempt is to make it available for all 52 countries so that people do not move out of their home towns still get education and health from a distant India with all expenses borne by India, the benefit of which has so far seen over 6,000 african students getting education and many lives saved.
India today has become a aid donor country to IMF with significant donations which sustains countries like pakistan in need of that money.
there are countless other efforts across the globe right from haiti, to latin america to rest of asia to much much more than what i have listed.

but then yes, after all India is a self centered country!

Even though the article is a bit of a joke, I kind of like the title - Self Centred India. That is where we should be centred. We need to bother about ourselves & our interests and where we can help friends who might appreciate our help, do so. Enough with this awkward dance on helping/not helping a country that has not asked for our help and that will most probably refuse any offer. What the FM did was correct. No need to pretend that our relationship with Pakistan is better enough to warrant us doing anything else. Whether or not the aid would have been of any use, it is discomforting to enough Pakistanis, especially those in power. No point in unnecessarily irritating anyone especially when any offer will be dismissed as self serving or condescending.

Whoever has written this article is either grossly ignorant of facts or looking for cheap popularity.
