In this week's UpFront, Mehdi Hasan speaks to Iranian Vice President and Head of Iran's Environmental Protection Organisation, Masoumeh Ebtekar, on her country's support for Bashar al-Assad in Syria, and Iran's advances in the fight against climate change.

In the Reality Check, we look into how the president of newly democratic Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi, is turning a blind eye to the violence against the country's Muslim Rohingya population.

And in the Arena, cultural critic and philosopher Slavoj Zizek defends his stance on the European refugee crisis.

Headliner - Iran VP: Syria war images 'bother me'
Since the Arab Spring began in 2011, Iran has declared support for the uprisings in Egypt, Libya and Bahrain.

But in Syria, hundreds of thousands have been killed and millions displaced, yet Iran continues to support President Bashar al-Assad.

Iranian Vice President Masoumeh Ebtekar says the "people of Syria" have the "right to decide", and blames "foreign powers arming terrorist groups" in the war-torn country.

"This is something that has to be addressed," says Ebtekar. "I think the people of Syria should be supported in terms of their struggle against terrorism."

In this week's Headliner, Mehdi Hasan talks to the Iranian vice president and head of Iran's Environmental Protection Organisation.

Reality Check - Aung San Suu Kyi's shameful silence on Rohingya
In Myanmar, violent attacks on the Muslim Rohingya have left hundreds dead and hundreds of thousands displaced.

Is Myanmar's de facto leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, turning a blind eye to the violence?

In this week's Reality Check, Mehdi Hasan shows how Myanmar's leadership is in denial when it comes to recognising the Rohingya.

Arena - Slavoj Zizek on a 'clash of civilisations'
Europe is home to more than 1.3 million refugees, mostly from Africa and the Middle East, with thousands more coming every month.

Some are calling the refugees incompatible with European values, and a few governments have begun passing anti-immigration laws in response.

Philosopher and cultural critic Slavoj Zizek, who also calls for more scrutiny of the refugees, says that while most of the refugees are caused by "European geopolitical games", there needs to be "clearly established" rules before accepting any more.

"I want even more refugees. I only want rules to be clearly established," says Zizek. "In spite of all the differences, there is some minimum Western notion of human rights, freedom, equality."

In this week's Arena, Mehdi Hasan challenges the Slovenian thinker.

Because iran is against Isis. Al nusra all Qaeda affliate groups

Because iran is against Isis. Al nusra all Qaeda affliate groups

that is not the main thing here.. yes iran is against Isis al nusra or any other sunni groub or non groub..

the real issue is alawi had been declared religious parter and ally to encounter israel.. that is the main thing losing syria would make iran much weaker and would even be the end of hezbiran ..

the fall of iran lies in the fall of its weaker allies..

Iran is only interested in keeping its ally Assad safe at the cost of tens of thousands or even a million Syrians. Half of the population is already on the run and yet people here somehow think that Syrians still want Assad. incest loving mullas of Iran are the reason why Syrians are suffering.

Iran is Shia version of ISIS. Both use religious slogans, but in fact they are godless corrupt psychopaths dreaming about Middle East empire:

The only difference between two is that Iranian regime is more hypocrite.

The main reason why Russia iran support Assad is because he is a true Secular leader check out recent polls show Assad has majority Syrian support .so to prevent syria from becoming Afghanistan before 2001 jungle law Jihadis kharjis control. Regarding isreal iran is against isreali occupation of of Palestinian .
That's how isreali treats Palestinian iran is voice of victims supporting true Palestinians cause

sectarian reasons

otherwise they have no reason to force a brutal alewite dictator upon a sunni muslim majority

We will not give Syria up to ISIS, Al-Nusra and other terrorists whom are backed by Israel.
Moreover most of Syrian citizens are Sunnis so we are protecting Sunnis from terrorists too.

Because he is shia . no matter if he has a character like yazeed .
He is a Baathi Liberal. Religion has no place in our measures. Believe it or not we are protecting Syrian people against terrorists.

Calm down mate. the more aggressive you will be towards other side, the thread will go no where.

Here is my personal opinion.

The point is every civilization has some cultural impact around its periphery. Iran, being one of the oldest civilization, is seeking to influence around its neighborhood. And i do not see anything wrong in it. Again, if you leave aside Iran and its stand on Palestine issue, in general, you do not see many radical Islamic terrorist around the globe, belongs to Iran or its school of thought. Rather it is other side who oppose Iran, and its influence is creating many radical hard line groups around the world.

So it is safer to have Iran backed Assad, than isis backed any Gov in Syria.

Simple answer: because jihadis will kill Muslims and none Muslims in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and... for sake of Zionists.
So your country is doing genocide of Muslims so that Jihadis will not be able to kill them ? ?

Stop repeating yourself like a parrot and look at the facts and figures. This maniac Assad SoB killed more people than ISIS Nusra and all the factions fighting in Syria combined!
He rejected the reports of use of Barrel bombs yet there are alot of video evidence of helicopters dropping them, He also denied using chemical weapons. He is a pathological liar and his hands are full of innocent blood.
I know what your response would be If Saddam or King of Bahrain treated those Shias the same way Assad is treating Sunnis. Unfortunately you all are hypocrites to the core and will only understand the language of violence. wait n see where it gets you.
To Victory and it will lead you to failure thats no doubt.
