Kabul:
An American soldier was killed during operations against the Islamic State (IS) group in Afghanistan late on Saturday, the US military said in a statement posted on Twitter.

“A US soldier was killed in action while conducting operations against ISIS-Khorasan in Afghanistan,” US Navy Captain Bill Salvin said, referring to a provincial affiliate of the jihadist group.

“The soldier was mortally wounded late on Saturday during an operation in (eastern) Nangarhar Province. More information will be released as appropriate,” Salvin was quoted as saying by the official Twitter account of NATO’s Resolute Support mission.

Nangarhar, which borders Pakistan, is a hotbed of IS militancy and American forces have conducted a number of air strikes on jihadist bases in the area since August last year.

IS, notorious for their brutal reign of terror in Syria and Iraq, has been making inroads into Afghanistan in recent years. They are known to be comprised of disaffected Pakistani and Afghan Taliban, as well as Uzbek Islamists.

But the group has been steadily losing territory in the face of heavy pressure from both US airstrikes and a ground offensive led by Afghan forces.

Islamic State’s strength has depleted to 600-700 fighters from 3,000 in early 2016, NATO has said, adding that it killed the top 12 IS commanders in Afghanistan last year.

The jihadists claimed a deadly assault on Afghanistan’s largest military hospital last month, but survivors who spoke to AFP said the attackers chanted “Long live Taliban” in Pashto.

A US soldier was killed during the counter-terrorism operations in eastern Nangarhar province of Afghanistan.

A spokesman for the US Forces in Afghanistan Captain Bill Salvin said “A US soldier was killed in action while conducting operations against ISIS-Khorasan in Afghanistan.”

He said the soldier was mortally wounded late Saturday during an operation in Nangarhar province.

No further details were given regarding the identity of the deceased soldier, saying “More information will be released as appropriate.”

This comes as at least three US soldiers were wounded in an explosion in Jalalabad city, the provincial capital of eastern Nangarhar province last month.

The Afghan and US forces based in Afghanistan regularly conduct counter-terrorism operations against the ISIS loyalists in eastern Nangarhar province of Afghanistan.

The local officials are saying that the Afghan forces are busy conducting the operations under the name of Hamza while the operations by US forces mostly comprise of airstrikes.

The increased raids by US forces follow a broader role granted to them by the Obama administration earlier last year, a step which was taken amid concerns that the ISIS affiliates are attempting to expand foothold in Afghanistan and turn Nangarhar into their regional operational base.

At least two hundred US soldiers have been deployed in the restive Helmand province in South of Afghanistan.

Officials in the Ministry of Defense (MoD) said the soldiers have recently been deployed to train, advise, and assist the Afghan forces who are facing a resurgent Taliban.

MoD spokesman Mohammad Radmanish said the US forces are currently stationed in Bastion camp and will also assist the Afghan forces in coordinating close-air support.

Radmanish further added that the issue of the deployment of further US troops to Afghanistan is still under consideration but no decisions have been taken in this regard so far.

The deployment of 200 US forces in Helmand comes as the Afghan forces have already started a major counter-terrorism operation under the name of Khalid operations.

The Ministry of Defense (MoD) officials earlier said the Khalid operations have been launched from the two districts of Helmand, including Garamser and Nad-e-Ali and Nish district of southern Kandahar province.

The officials further added that the three districts are facing enormous security challenges and the Afghan forces will continue to maintain pressure on insurgents so that they are eventually eliminated.

The Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) conducted counter-terrorism operations under the name of Shafaq last year.

The operations were launched days after the Taliban group announced their spring offensive earlier last year.

Ground for isis or to provide help to isis to launch attack near chin pak russia border. Trust me Russia this time with a new weapon so stop sending whores as we know your beloved sons isis is already here.

The return of failure part 2 :D
You sure about that?

As long as American forces are stationed in Afghanistan, Taliban can never hope to achieve a breakthrough in the battlefield and topple American-backed regime there. No chance of repeat of Babrak karmal (episode) this time.

American operation against ISIS in the Achin district - MOAB strike included - is sufficient proof that they are willing to adopt extreme measures to teach any force a lesson that becomes too ambitious.

It is getting interesting day by day... A simple assessment that US is in same position what Soviet Russia was in 80's.. So US will taste same defeat what Soviet tasted earlier..
This time designer is Russia... :smart:
Do not forget Syria.

Contrary to fanboy theories, Russia is not in the position to counter American intervention in Afghanistan. China also desires a stable Afghanistan.

Realistically, nobody can win in Afghanistan without taking US onboard.

American stance for Afghanistan is crystal clear: http://nation.com.pk/international/...te-solution-of-afghanistan-except-dialogue-us

Taliban has no option but to embrace the new Afghan governmental setup. This is the only way forward.

Russia, China and Pakistan can meet for a thousand times but they won't get anywhere without taking US into confidence on matters concerning Afghanistan.

Even if you persuade the Pakistani-based Afghan Taliban to make peace somehow the local Afghans fighting the most corrupt government on earth(UN sources)will reject the peace deal and they will continue fighting. In the end US army has lost and the prime goal of America right now is to continue war indefinetely because they dont want to loose prestige and because they sell weapons.

I don't think so... US economy is not that much supporting what it used to be earlier...

The United States Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis has said the ongoing year of 2017 will be another tough year for the Afghan security forces.

Mr. Mattis arrived in Afghanistan in an unannounced visit on Monday to meet with the Afghan officials and the officials of the US forces and the NATO-led Resolute Support mission.

Speaking during a press conference on Monday afternoon, Mattis said “2017’s going to be another tough year for the valiant Afghan security forces and the international troops who have stood and will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with Afghanistan against terrorism and against those who seek to undermine the legitimate United Nations-recognized government of this nation.”

Mattis condemned the deadly attack on the Shaheen Army Corps in North of Afghanistan, saying “And, as if we needed a reminder, as I stand here before you, of the type of enemy that we’re up against, the killing of Afghan citizens, soldiers, protectors of the people, just as they were coming out of a mosque, you know, coming out of a house of worship — it certainly characterizes this fight for exactly what it is.”

He also added that President Trump has directed a review of our policy in Afghanistan as the new administration takes hold in Washington. “This dictates an on-going dialogue with Afghanistan’s leadership, and that’s why I came here.”

“I talked again with President Ghani, with his ministers, and heard directly and at length from the NATO commander, General Nicholson, in — in order to provide my best assessment and advice as we go forward, advice to the president, to the NATO secretary general and all the troop-contributing nations with whom I coordinate and collaborate,” he added.

WASHINGTON: The Pentagon on Friday said it was investigating whether two US special operations commandos who were killed in Afghanistan this week had been struck by friendly fire.

Army Ranger sergeants Joshua Rodgers and Cameron Thomas died in a raid overnight Wednesday-Thursday as they helped attack a headquarters compound of the Daesh group in eastern Nangarhar province.

“We are investigating the circumstances of the combat deaths of the two Army Rangers in the beginning of what was an intense three-hour firefight,” Pentagon spokesman Navy Captain Jeff Davis said.

Davis said about 50 US special forces and 40 Afghan commandos had been choppered in to the Mohmand Valley late Wednesday near the compound used by Abdul Hasib, whom the Pentagon called the Daesh leader in Afghanistan.

That local jihadist group is affiliated with Daesh in Iraq and Syria, and the US military calls it Daesh of Khorasan,
“Within a few minutes of landing, our combined force came under intense fire from multiple directions and well-prepared fighting positions,” US Forces-Afghanistan said in a statement.

“Nevertheless, our forces successfully closed on the enemy, killed several high-level Daesh leaders and upwards of 35 fighters.”

The compound was located near the tunnel complex where the US military on April 13 unleashed the “Mother Of All Bombs” — a GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast device that the Pentagon said was the biggest non-nuclear weapon it had ever used in combat.

Davis said officials suspected Hasib was killed in Wednesday’s raid, but it had not been confirmed.
In a statement, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis paid tribute to the two dead Rangers.

“Fighting alongside their Afghan partners, Josh and Cameron proved themselves willing to go into danger and impose a brutal cost on enemies in their path,” Mattis said.

“Our nation owes them an irredeemable debt, and we give our deepest condolences to their families.”
The Pentagon estimates that about 1,000 Daesh fighters remain in Afghanistan.

The jihadists established a foothold there in early 2015 and their numbers now are about half what they were at their peak.

“If confirmed, the death of the emir (Hasib) and his associates will significantly degrade Daesh operations in Afghanistan and help reach our goal of destroying them in 2017,” US-Forces Afghanistan said.

The US plans to ramp up its troop presence in Afghanistan by 3,000 as part of President Donald Trump's new strategy to defeat the Taliban and Islamic State militant group.

Ahead of the expected release of the Af-Pak plan, the White House yesterday said Trump wants to have a winning strategy in the war-torn country.

The new strategy, which has the backing of top Cabinet officials, would authorise the Pentagon, not the White House, to set troop numbers in Afghanistan and give the military far broader authority to use airstrikes to target Taliban militants, The Washington Post reported.

Trump is expected to make a final call on the strategy before a May 25 NATO summit in Brussels that he plans to attend. "The new strategy would also lift Obama-era restrictions that limited the mobility of US military advisers on the battlefield," it added.

"The new strategy is a product of the US military's mounting worries that the fragile stalemate with the Taliban has been steadily eroding for years, jeopardising the survival of an allied government and endangering a key US base for combating militant groups such as al-Qaeda and the Islamic State throughout South Asia," the report said.

Stating that Trump's most military and foreign policy advisors have proposed a major shift in its strategy towards Afghanistan, the report said the plan envisions an increase of at least 3,000 US troops to an existing force of about 8,400.

The US force would also be bolstered by requests for matching troops from NATO nations. According to the report, the increase in US troop level and aid to Afghanistan would be conditioned upon the efforts of the Ghani Government in Kabul to fight against corruption and improve governance.

Trump, who is having a series of meetings with his top national security advisors including his national security advisor Lt Gen H R McMaster is yet to give his approval to the strategy, the daily said. In a similar report, CNN said both McMaster and the Defence Secretary James Mattis favour troop increase in this war ravaged country.

"The same source said Trump's chief strategist, Steve Bannon, and his small contingent of nationalists are expected to push back when those recommendations hit Trump's desk," the news channel reported.

At the same time, the strategy would retain the previous administration's reconciliation policy with the Taliban.

Meanwhile, the White House asserted that Trump wants to have a winning strategy in Afghanistan. "I think he (Trump) wants to make sure that we do what we can to win. That's why he charged the generals and other military advisors and national security team to come up with a plan that can get us there," White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer told reporters at his daily news conference.

Trump wants to defeat both the ISIS militant group and Taliban in Afghanistan, he said. "It's to make sure that we put our national security interests first, and defeat all of those folks that seek to do us harm," he said in response to a question.

The US President is receiving a plan and guidance from his national security team as he had asked form, he said adding that that guidance is coming forward. "He's continued to meet with them," he said.

According to Spicer, Trump not only wants to defeat the ISIS and Taliban, he also wants make sure that the US protects its people in a responsible and smart way.

"He has talked about not projecting where he's going and what he’s going to do to let the enemy know ahead of time...How do we achieve those key outcomes? How do we do what's in the country's best interest and utilise our military and our treasure to the best of our ability? That is something that we're continuing to work on and do, and that’s part of what he is getting briefed on and is implementing," Spicer said.

US troops are stepping up attacks on an extremist group considered an Islamic State affiliate in the country. The three most recent US deaths in Afghanistan were in combat last month against the IS affiliate, which also was the target of a US airstrike on April 13 using the "mother of all bombs".
