US diplomat's car crushes Pakistani to death in Islamabad.

Seeing how mopeds were driven in Egypt (I assume Pakistanis aren't much more careful)....it's a wonder this doesn't happen more often. RIP to the dead.

Pakistani traffic is not as brutal as that of Cairo's (except maybe Karachi) though anywhere outside of main areas of Lahore or Islamabad there isn't much road discipline

i think this thread isn't worthy simply because I do think this was an accident....people are still having Raymond Davis affair on their minds and it brought about a huge amount of anger and resentment

as for the diplomat -- probably re-assigned another job somewhere else. The embassy ought to pay a handsome fine to the government and pay a large re compensation to the family -- since the dead guy was probably a bread-winner.

Many people are against diplomatic immunity. They say why ordinary people are punished when committing a crime and diplomats are not punished. Are they better than we are? Every time when some diplomat commits a crime or violates the law, the public debate over diplomatic immunity arises. If a person with immunity commits a crime in some host country, this country advises his/her government of the committed crime and may request a waiver of the alleged offender's immunity so that person could be judged by court of the host country. But if the immunity is not waived, the host country may order the withdrawal of the offender from the country. If the member of diplomat's family have committed a crime, then entire family may be expelled. The most common abuse of local laws by diplomats are parking violations and driving under the influence of alcohol. If the crime is committed, the sender country should waive the diplomatic immunity from the person who committed that crime and he or she should be sent under the court of host country where the crime was committed. But unfortunately seems that some countries have lack of morality. For example United States of America. When crime is committed there, always public debate arises over diplomatic immunity. But their own diplomats along European diplomats even their personal staff are violating other countries laws as well. If all countries would waive the diplomatic immunity from the criminals the situations would be different. You cant break the american laws inside america even if you are diplomat you have no immunity impunity but extreme discrimination in other cases there should be no diplomatic immunity for any country diplomats in Pakistan and they should be punished more severe rigorously rather then the citizens of host country because these foreign diplomats in long Mercedes BMW land cruisers specially in capital of Pakistan playing games making fun of Pakistani citizens as they feel no fear due to superiority complex of diplomatic immunity impunity as they knew no law enforcing agency can even touch them come near to them extreme shameful for Pakistani top leaders and establishment and parliament who make laws public wealth looters precious tax wasters because they themselves enjoy in their castles with full security protocol while leave their citizens to be harassed abused and killed by these foreign out of control un controlled animals.

Don't know which idiot came up with the idea of blanket immunity for diplomats. Let me guess it was Americans. Their movements should be limited inside our country and only be allowed to make visits concerning matters of joint concerns.

The idea of diplomatic immunity goes back thousands of years and is not new. Most relationships granting immunity were usually bilateral and agreed upon by states on a mutually acceptable basis. The roots of modern diplomatic immunity go back to 1709 when the British Parliament guaranteed diplomatic immunity to foreign ambassadors. These modern practices were codified by the United Nations Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, signed in 1961 and ratified by 187 countries.

No, it is not; this is precisely the sort of thing diplomatic immunity is meant for.

Yes, it's possible to blame the country, but you can't sanction the diplomat, save to kick him out of Pakistan. If the diplomat was inebriated, for example, then the U.S. can be blamed for letting a diplomat drive in that state of mind. But no, a traffic accident is not itself proof of murder, indeed murder (i.e., premeditated manslaughter) is rarely suspected in such cases, nor is it likely to be proved as such in court without considerable evidence, rather than the vapors that fuel the rumor mills in Pakistan.

And now you're in Loo-Loo Land.

Frankly ,the whole idea of Dilomatic Immunity is total bull$hit. While that whole thing about India holding the Italian ambassador was going on , I found an article detailing many historical misuses of diplomatic immunity , one in your own country. Apparently , one diplomat from Guyana raped a girl in NYC , the police arrested him , and the girl left the police station after the arrest. The next day , she saw him chilling at a coffee shop. The guy raped about 15 women during his stay in NYC and wasn't convicted of anything. This diplomatic immunity is a big tool of oppression.

Can someone in Pakistan provide update as to what is being reported and what has happened thus far? What is the Government's response, or police to this case?
