Cold war was won not by military power but economic power, in which U.S. was many times over the former U.S.S.R.

Now China is way much powerful than the former U.S.S.R. in economic power. Will U.S. go down the road again??? I hardly think so.

B-1 bomber mission shifts to the Asia-Pacific region

The strategy pivots from missions over the deserts and mountains of Afghanistan to targets on the sea and, though the military doesn't come out directly and say it, in China. "We're going back to the future," says Col. David Been, commander of the 7th Bomb Wing at Dyess. "As the balance shifts from almost exclusively Afghanistan right now, we're shifting to the Asia-Pacific region."

Obama announced the new strategy in January that looks to counter the rising power of China. The changing role of the B-1 is a prime example of how the Air Force is responding.

Suddenly, the B-1, a plane that once seemed irrelevant after the end of the Cold War, is being repurposed again. First, the B-1 became the workhorse of the air war in Afghanistan. Now, as the Pentagon's strategic vision shifts to Asia, so too is the B-1.

"The B-1's capabilities are particularly well-suited to the vast distances and unique challenges of the Pacific region, and we'll continue to invest in, and rely on, the B-1 in support of the focus on the Pacific directed in the president's new strategic guidance," said Maj. Gen. Michael Holmes, assistant deputy chief of staff for Air Force Operations, Plans and Requirements at the Pentagon.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta highlighted those changes during a series of meetings with Pacific leaders recently.

"One of those principles in our strategy is the ability to be agile, to be quickly deployable, to be flexible, and to be on the cutting edge of technology," Panetta said in Cam Ranh, Vietnam. "And in a region as large as the Asia-Pacific region, agility is going to be extremely important in terms of our ability to be able to move quickly."

The armed services also will have to make do with less, with $480 billion in cuts to projected budgets forecast over the next 10 years. That puts a premium on existing weapons, at least in the near term. The Air Force wants a new bomber, one that is invisible to radar and possibly pilot-less. But that plane wouldn't be ready for combat until well into the next decade.

The B-1's revived fortunes, however, bode well for the communities that depend on the jobs affiliated with the bomber. The Air Force employs 13,000 people to support B-1 operations in three states, with an estimated economic impact just shy of $1 billion, records show. Not only is the bomber based at Dyess Air Force Base in Texas, but it is also at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota, and there is a maintenance facility in Oklahoma City.

If we say "copy from", it seems that both U.S. and U.S.S.R. copied them from a country called Germany. Maybe we should all pay our fees to Germany's Nazi Scientists, right???

these words dont suit u
you copied every thing frm them n now criticizing them
Hey I'm just saying ;-)

US has significant lead over China, whereas SU was neck to neck with US that time...Cold war on economic front is not near, $ is still trade currency, China mainly depends on manufacturing industry, but many countries have gained pace which may challenge China's production in certain fields.

US is exerting pressure on China supporting its neighbour far away across Pacific Ocean. Keeping the opponent on edge, takes a serious toll on a country, India experience it because of Pakistan and China, Pakistan due to India. Its more about increasing paranoia in these countries rather taking military action, as later will be end up in stalemate.

During the cold war US and USSR never fought a war, USSR was defeated economically, that was then today US virtually controls the world economy and they can take decisions for half of the planet such is their diplomatic clout, China or any other country will need another 50+ years or so to challenge US, doesn't mean China, North Korea, Iran or even a fringe terrorist group cannot be a nuisance or even a threat to US

In 50 years???

China does not need 50 years to surpass U.S. Half of that time will be enough.

BTW, during the cold war, the best U.S.S.R. has ever achieved was barely 1/2 of U.S. GDP, and may say it should be much lower in reality.

Think again..until some miracle happens, no country can challenge US's standing in the world for another century.

you have stealth fighters?you made them?you put your fighter planes to test?I only know that India has world highest crash rate for their imported foreign planes.

You shld blame CCP for your Lack of knowledge of latest happening .........And spoon feeding you the news of their choice :D

India declare everything in Advance.....For the whole world to see it ...sometimes it gives aways too much info like the radar, weapon it can carry and location of base it is suppose to be placed.......but thats shows transparency so we know exactly what we have and what we can expect from this fighter jets....

In case of China...it recieves a xerox builds a plane in 2yr including everything radar and weapon certification......voila And CCP 50 cent brigade goes posting pic around net.....best Fighter jet....can take down F-22 ...And Cheerleaders here go yes yes it is the best ......Coz they had a epiphany
