KARACHI: At the Mutthida Quami Movement (MQM) ‘Ulema and Mashaikh Convention’, hundreds of religious scholars and custodians of shrines of Muslim saints rejected the Taliban brand of shariah on Sunday.

“Suicide attacks and murder of any person on the basis of sectarian differences is forbidden in Islam,” a unanimously adopted resolution, issued at the end of the convention, declared. The resolution also turned down suicide attacks on mosques, Imam Bargahs and shrines of saints because of sectarian differences.

The religious scholars belonging to Sunni and Shia schools of thought including Salafi agreed with the declarations. Many of those who spoke at the occasion also announced their support to MQM’s stand against Nizam-e-Adl in Swat and said that they too rejected Talibanisation.

‘The shariah introduced by Hazrat Muhammad (SAW), is complete and adequate for us and we do not need Nizam-e-Adl,’ said another resolution adopted at the Ulema Convention.

Sunni Barlevi scholar Hamza Ali Qadri, Makhdoom Nafees ur Rehman of Uch Sharif shrine, Sunni Tehrik’s Khizar ul Islam,

Deobandi scholars’ Maulana Ehteram-ul-Haq Thanvi, Tanveer ul Haq Thanvi, Mufti Mohammad Naeem, Asad Deobandi, Qari Saeed Qamar Qasmi,

Shia scholars Maulana Mirza Yousuf Hussain, Maulana Shahriar Abedi, Maulana Nazir Taqvi and former Senator Allama Abbas Kumaili, Ahl-e-Hadith and

Salafi scholar Amir Abdullah Farooqi and Dr Abdul Khaliq Pirzada, addressed the event.

Allama Abbas Kumaili said that the 1973 Constitution gave protection to all Muslim sects. “They enjoy a constitutional right to spend their life according to their own creed. The Taliban brand of shariah does not allow opposing sects to spend their life according to their creed and it is against the 1973 Constitution,” he said.

Allama Hamza Ali Hanafi Qadri said that the unity of Muslims was a dire need of the hour adding, “Un-Islamic forces are also involved in the Talibanisation. Pakistan is an Islamic state and does not need Taliban shariah.”

Allama Tanveer ul Haq Thanvi, a Deobandi scholar denounced the Taliban, JUI and Jamaat-e-Islami saying that they were not the spokespersons of Deobandi school of thought. “Deobandis are known for Ashraf Ali Thanvi. Islam is the religion of peace and sanity and not of massacre,” he said.

“For God’s sake, bury your petty differences and join hands against Talibanisation,” MQM Chief Altaf Hussain urged them in his telephonic address from London. He asked them to come forward against the Ulema-e-Soo and not to remain silent in the mosques and seminaries. He said that it was their responsibility to bring to light the brutal acts of the Taliban.

“Have you not seen that Taliban have slaughtered innocent people like animals due to the differences of ideology and sect and destroyed the tombs of revered saints?” he questioned.

He alleged that Taliban wanted to destroy the tombs of revered saints in Punjab and Sindh like they did with the shrine of Rehman Baba in the NWFP province. He said Taliban had no right to destroy these respectable places.

“They have killed more than 23 Sufis and Pirs including Pir Samiullah, Pir Sharifullah and Iftekhar Habibi due to the difference of ideology in Malakand,” he said.

He said that some elements interpret the Holy Quran in a way that is not acceptable to recognised schools of Islamic thought but they insist on their own interpretation and want to impose that. “This convention has been organised to discuss a very important subject that causes problems for the oppressed people of the country,” the MQM chief said adding that MQM wants the ulemas guidance and opinion to defeat Talibanisation.

He said that Taliban destroyed a mosque of Barlevi school of thought and called that Masjid-e-Zarar. “Ulema and mashaikh must make it public that suicide bombings on Shia mosques and Imam Bargahs and the bloodshed of Shia, Barlevi, Sunnis and of any sect of Muslims is not right,” he urged.

“I am a Muslim and MQM is not against the Islamic shariah but I want to make it clear that MQM is against the tribal shariah of Taliban,” he asserted. “Neither the first four Muslims Caliphs nor any Imam taught us about the oppression that these Taliban are acting upon, he said. He said that enforcement of NAR was just the beginning of Talibanisation in the country at gunpoint.

The MQM chief cited Sufi Mohammad’s speech in which he said that only black turbans are allowed in Islam while terming the Supreme Court and High Courts in Pakistan as un-Islamic and maintaining that democracy is also an un-Islamic system of governance. “Everybody will take the Taliban’s permission before they marry or divorce,” Hussain quoted Sufi Mohammad.

“If Shia and Sunni rivals of Taliban demand that their interpretation of shariah laws be imposed for all, what will happen in the country?” he questioned and suggested that it was high time to choose between Pakistan and Taliban.
