UAE leaders open Dubai Airshow 2019

UAE Will Grow GlobalEye And MRTT Fleets
Nov 19, 2019

The United Arab Emirates has revealed its intentions to grow its Saab GlobalEye and Airbus A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) fleets.

In a surprise announcement on the third day of the Dubai air show here, UAE defense officials confirmed they were in final negotiations with Saab for an additional two Bombardier 6000-based GlobalEye Swing Role Surveillance System, in addition to the three already on order. The contract for the additional GlobalEyes is expected to be worth $1.018 billion.

An order for three additional A330 MRTTs will be a shot across the bow of Boeing, which revealed earlier this year that the UAE had shown interest in the troubled KC-46.

The UAE already has three MRTTs and the platforms are used heavily in support of UAE Air Force fighter deployments and operations across the region. No details of a contract value for the additional MRTTs has been revealed.

“We are pleased with this decision and look forward on working with our customer,” a spokesman for Airbus told Aerospace DAILY.

Saab said it had not yet signed the contract amendment or received an order relating to the announcement.

The additional aircraft orders were announced as UAE defense officials also confirmed nearly 7 billion Dirhams ($1.91 billion) worth of contracts negotiated on the second day of the show. Contract recipients included Raytheon for Patriot missiles, Edge’s Halcon weaponry company and Denel Dynamics.

The only irritating thing i have observed is the merging of successive posts into one making it confusing to distinguish

What is the type of seeker head ? Semi active laser or Imaging infrared ?
SALH seeker
I saw LinkedIn and it seems company has a lot of experts in optics field from South Africa and Emirati nationals. It has knowledge for producing seekers, but no clue if imported or domestically produced seekers. It seems a lot of South Africans are leaving country and going to UAE and KSA to find high paying jobs because of a hibernating South African defense industry.

I found these job descriptions so must be testing, and validating seekers in production using automated systems.

LabVIEW & TestStand Applications Specialist with a focus on the testing and calibration of semi-active laser tracking electro optics. Responsible for the development and support of automated test equipment used in acceptance and environmental testing of precision guided munition systems and subsystems in a production ecosystem. Provide client support with regards to product support and fit for service testing.
