Progressive movements among Muslims decades ago were easier because we had nations colonized by Western countries. For example in South Asia under the Brits. These progressive movements generally became the outlet for aspiration for progressive freedom.

Now that South Asia is "independent", regressive attitudes have become cemented under the name of traditions and religious freedom. I speak especially of India and Pakistan, in particular of India which got a wrong interpretation of secularism in the post-Nehru years, which meant that "I will tolerate your religious nonsense as long as you tolerate my religious nonsense".

You are correct that a single petition can start the ball rolling. I myself intend to do that once I am able to get a platform in the next three to five years.

But even among today's progressives can be found youth like Qais Jaunpuri who spoke out this brilliant dastaangoi ( story narration ) called "Main namaaz nahi padunga".

I believe you when you say that political discussions are not allowed in Tableeghi gatherings. And it is a wrong thing because Islam is a inherently socialist political system.

As far as I understand, via the Tableeghis who used to come to my house to invite me for prayers, they concentrate on just the cultural part - prayers, fasting etc.

Which is why where ever in the world, whether Russia or whether Indonesia, the Tableeghis have been allowed to operate, they have come of good use for NATO and the American government.

The simple formula is :

Socialist Muslim = Enemy of NATO
Tableeghi/Extremely religious Muslim = Friend of NATO​

Some years ago, a group of Muslims working in IBM-India spoke to their management for permission for prayer time and location within their office.

IBM-India doesn't have an employee union but IBM-USA has.

Our Tableeghi brothers did not struggle for an employee union in their India office. When in February 2014 thousands of IBM-India employees were sacked cruelly there was no local employee union to oppose the sacking.

What use were all those prayers then??
