Russia lifts embargo on weapons supplies to Pakistan

Nothing yet on numbers. Russian ambassador to Pakistan Dedov says that the Helos are Russian contribution in combating Uzbek, Tajik, ETIM militants threatening the whole region. Saying that its a collective effort.

Russia ready to sell MI-35 helicopters to Pakistan: Dedov
Islamabad: Russia has said it is willing to supply MI-35, a multi-purpose military transport helicopter for combat missions, to Pakistan to assist the country in fighting terrorism.

Russian Ambassador to Pakistan Alexey Dedov announced this at a news conference held in the embassy yesterday, ahead of next week's visit of Pakistani Prime Minister's Foreign Affairs Adviser Sartaj Aziz to Russia.

"Pakistan has expressed its interest in buying MI-35 helicopters and we have shown our willingness to provide them," said the ambassador.

He said the deal was not finalised yet but the two sides were in touch over the issue. "There is ongoing cooperation with Pakistan in the field of defence and counter-terrorism and security," Dedov said.

"Presence of Uzeb, Tajik, ETIM militants in Pakistan's tribal areas are posing a security threat to the entire region and collective efforts are needed to tackle this menace," he was quoted as saying by Dawn news.

Dedov denied that there was any ban on selling defence equipment to Pakistan. Pakistan's request for MI-35 helicopters, which is intended for combat missions on day-and-night basis in adverse weather conditions, was made in 2009, but Russia delayed the issue due to its traditional strong ties with India, which was Russia's "exclusive military technical cooperation partner."

Russia has long been the largest supplier of arms to India, the world's top arms buyer. India recently chose to buy arms from Israel, France, Britain and the United States to modernise its armed forces' ageing hardware.

Aziz will travel to Russian city of Kazan to participate in the 5th International Meeting of High-Level Officials Responsible for Security Matters from June 18-20.

He would also meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during the visit.

as i reminded, there are no stingers this time around

it is quit obvious that if americans provide stingers to ttp... we will do the same which we have done in past... we do provide our stingers (ANZA) to Afghan talibans ... and any one can guess who will get the maximum loss :azn: . so despite all the support americans will never ever provide stingers to ttp :dance3:

why this political pig's face attached to this gunship :what: . MI35 bura man jaega :p:

I don't think the deal would even go beyond 16-20 Numbers approx.

Lets see what comes out in end , but we do have need for 100 Helicopters for mountain battles and not to mention city patrolling in tense situation vs Anti Terrorist operations

i think the army just wants to fill gap for now as they gear up for major offensive. the jets are not good due to higher collateral damage. plus, jets can stick around for long period of time. they're costly to operate as well. Best solution is choppers, bomb thr hideouts, land some troops and bam. Jets bombs and leaves...

Will pakistan be acquiring other equip like night vision or guns etc? Russia has some good equipments when compared to usa.

Hi,

It is all about marketing----. after Mushy pak has forgotten to market itself in the u s and the rest of the world.

Secondly---what happened two days ago in iraq---the u s finds itself in another trap---. all the hoopla behind local trained troops just bit the dust real hard---the position of the allies like turkey and pakistan changes again.

Same for russia as well------russia don't want any fundos in its region---the situation has become extremely critical and explosive

Pak needs to cash in now----they need the euipment now---on fast trak---gunship helicopters like the mi 35---l.

What has happened in iraq has shell shocked the americans----.

Pak needs to ask the russians for atleast 6 MI 35's from existing stock for immediate strike missions.

America and its friends want to re-map Middle East. They are anything but shocked.

Pakistan should get at least 6 Mi-35 to immediately start operations. I agree with you there.

just as pakistan, the people in middle east can't accept democracy. look at egypt. If you want democracy, it'd take time for good one. We had PPP, not pmln. pml is doing better than ppp, but still not best.

Same in syria. They are divided with who are they supporting.. so many factions claiming to be democratic.

until we people learn to accept democracy, nothing will change. And stop blaiming usa for everything. the middle east itself wants to change maps... qatar, bahrain and saudi oppressing their people and other countries, like syria.

Mi24/35 is basically based on Mi-8/17 and Chinese got license productions rights and producing now Mi17s
PAA has over 60 Mi17s, with commonality and future prospects make sense

a sqdn of 10-12 Mi-35 for 150-200 Mil vs. 1B for western helo is no comparision

"Of the 138 aircraft ordered from foreign manufacturers in
the last 10 years, 80% have been Russian -made Mil Mi-17 Hip
transport helicopter variants purchased to address the lack of an indigenous medium helicopter
design. An assembly line for the type opened in China in
2008 to provide a further 20 helicopters a year."
