PESHAWAR - Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak has approved a comprehensive scheme based on most modern lines of the developed countries for the cleanliness, wastes and garbage collection, disposal and reprocessing in and around the provincial metropolis Peshawar.
While in the beginning the services of international firms will be hired for launching the scheme and training the personnel but none of the existing staff of the MC will be rendered jobless. The chief minister directed to identify, select and acquire four sites each on the four corners of the city where the wastes so collected will not only be transported and dumped but disposed, reprocessed and converted into energy. Thus, while acquiring such sites not only the present but the future requirements for all such processes at each of these sites will have to be kept in view. It will on the one hand avoid creation of traffic rash during the transportation of the wastes and garbage so collected while on the other hand minimize the carriage distance and so the costs.
As far as the services of international firms, it is aimed at hiring on the lines of what has been done for Lahore by the Punjab government and WASA there under which the jobs of all the employees will be protected so that none of them is rendered jobless. It has been principally decided that while the civic agency will continue to own its staff, workers and employees but in case some firm is hired it will acquire their (these workers) services on deputation, thus more financial benefits for these employees and that too at absolutely zero threat to their job security.
In this regard a high-level meeting was held in the Pakhtunkhwa House Islamabad Thursday under the Chairmanship of Chief Minister Pervez Khattak in which besides others Provincial Minister for Local Government and Rural Development Enayatullah Khan, Additional Chief Secretary Khalid Parvez, Secretary Local Council Board Attaur Rehman and Administrator Municipal Corporation Rasheed Ahmad Khan participated. It was revealed at the meeting that the provincial government has already taken up the matter with the authorities of Cantonment Board who too are ready to join the scheme thus, once launched it will be an all encompassing processes getting the Peshawarities rid of the environmental hazards and restoring the ages old beauty and aesthetics of the historic city otherwise known as a living museum.
On this occasion a Turkish delegation led by the Chairman of OzPak JV Muhibbi Kartal whose firm has been hired for such services in Lahore briefed the participants in detail about their works and services in Lahore. They shared their experience with the participants of the meeting and put forward a number of suggestions for successfully launching the scheme on sustainable basis. They also offered their services for Peshawar.
It was informed that the provincial government has done a lot of home and spade works on the scheme and in view of the directives of the chief minister the programme will be launched from the upcoming January.

Yes this initiative is giving some dividends. A good initiative.

LAHORE: A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was inked on Saturday among the Lahore Waste Management Company and newly-established waste management companies in six major cities of Punjab.

Under the MoU, the LWMC will help enhance coorporation among the companies set up in Gujranwala, Sialkot, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Multan and Bahawalpur in the field of waste management especially the provision of strategic and technical support.

I have to say this initiative is certainly a bright spot in Nawaz Sharif's present reign

If such initiatives were launched in Cities like Karachi / Quetta/ Peshawar

We can certainly say a positive change has occurred in civilians social areas during present government

They Turkish company brings in the "Big" Vision aspect , the planning and organization that is lacked in grass root level for such Metro projects in general. Plus they use local work force further enhancing the value of the project.

why cant a pakistani company do it. Instead of demanding same company you should demand same level of service because they have set a standard. Now time for some pakistani enterprenure to match it.

Looks like in Punjab after Lahore it will be Gujranwala, Sialkot, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Multan and Bahawalpur. In KPK Peshawar is confirmed, and maybe Quetta soon. But Karachi need the most, i hope MQM/PPP can do something about it instead of eating people taxes.

To be fair, the plan for solid waste management, CNG buses and BRT was completed back around 2007 for Karach by cdgk. A contract was given to a Chinese company but some assholes who view every progress as threat to their haramkhori started protesting and the project got cancelled I think by sindh government. Same thing happened when they tried banning polluting buses and rickshaws.

Just by collecting waste and garbage materials from Lahore city alone, these ppl have made millions...its a grea business.

I certainly agree :

After Lahore Waste Management Company have done so well in Lahore , perhaps they need a extension of contract to new cities:
Karachi
  • Peshawar
  • Quetta
  • Islamabad
  • Rawalpindi
