Punjab govt to set up laptop plant: minister

LAHORE (Online) - Punjab government has decided to establish a high quality laptop manufacturing plant at Sundar Industrial Estate in collaboration with highly reputed international computer hardware companies.

This was revealed by the Punjab Minister for Education Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan while presiding over a briefing session in Higher Education Department here Thursday.

The measure would help facilitate the distribution of laptop to the brilliant students in the province of Punjab at a larger scale.

The Minister said there is an indigenous demand of 80 thousand laptops per annum in the province for free of cost distribution among the intelligent students of various private and public sector universities in the province while there is an ample demand from the federally administered universities also.

“We will establish our own brand of laptop which will be a pride for our younger generation. We will not compromise on technical quality of Pakistan assembled laptop although the Punjab government will offer a chunk of land on concession rate to the well reputed companies for installation of the proposed assembling plant”, he added.

The minister said that this step will prove a milestone in the process of transfer of the latest technology to Pakistan and we will be able to export laptops of our brand to Africa, Middle East and Central Asia with the passage of time, he added.

The meeting was informed that one lakh laptops were procured from DELL this year out of which 92 thousand laptops were distributed on merit to the students while 8 thousand laptops are present in the stock. 72 thousand laptops are to be procured for provision to the next session of fresh graduates in January 2014.

The Education Minister constituted a special committee for procurement and distribution of laptops for the current year.

Thats a nice thing to build a laptop plant at Punjab.... it will strengthen the national economy.... :yay:

BUT WHY ONLY DISTRIBUTION IN PUNJAB???????? :hitwall: :hitwall: :hitwall:

Laptop "manufacturing"? Hahahaaaaa!!

Slapping together a motherboard into a casing and a folding display panel is called laptop manufacturing now? Well, if PAC can "manufacture" the Takhti, so can these fools.

THEY CAN.... and they'll prove it...

Because only Punjab gov. provisioned it in its provincial budget.

I think the article mentions assembly plant, probably the outer casing will be manufactured locally. and whatever the setup it will create technical jobs. My only concern is instead of GOP doing it, they should provide incentive to reputed international manufacturers to setup the plant with minimum 50/60 percent local manufacturing and exporting those components to their international plants from here.

Thats what I really wished to see……
I wished to see the HP or Dell locally manfacturing laptop…
It will reduce the coast…
and its not impossible as just GO Punjab purchase 80000 laptops and Gov of Pakistan too announced some plans regarding laptop distribution soo estimated ammount per annum should be 130000+local buyers=atleast 180000 which is good enough amount for any company to manfacture a laptop in any country……
but if its assemble then its fine in the start but shoupd expand to manfacturing in max 10 years……

Better for them to convince Korean or Japanese(especially as they have lost much of the business) to make 100% facilities where they can make all of their products in Punjab in a single industrial city.

:laughcry:

Which idiot gave Shahbaz Sharif the idea of distributing laptops? And that showman thinks that this leads to better education!

Let's see how N-league does corruption in this. Nandipur, hybrid cars, PIA already suspicious.

Although the laptop scheme itself will serve corruption more than education, but still any computer systems related plant (even assembly) can be considered as the first step towards locally manufactured electronics (processors specifically, although its a far fetched dream). The Chinese should be invited to invest.

It would create jobs for high skill labor and reduce import bill and lower down the cost . . . . that means ALL IS WELL.

And once again, govt will take the place of private businessmen.

Have you wondered why second hand computers and printers are sent to Pakistan by the container load and not manufactured or assembled there (hint- look at the regs) -- Just look and see how all the parts required can be had for ridiculously economic prices from China and Korea ---- but if govt does it, well, they can handle the issues of regs.

Instead of doing it themselves govt should be enacting legislation to enable private business to succeed in Pakistan, it works all over the world, except in Pakistan, perhaps more Pakistanis should be asking themselves and the govt why this is

I'd rather suggest Punjab government to invest in better internet technology and purchase chromebooks that cost $250.00 amazon.com

These idiots are making fool out of Pakistanis. I remember there was this company that was just assembling laptops and tagged them INBOX for some reason that company stopped manufacuring and is now selling different brand and the same company has contract with punjab goverment.

Take a look at their theecee bazi.
Inbox a proud partner of the 100,000 laptop scheme with Punjab Government

If i want i can take showbaz sharif to court for giving fake dell products several laptops have been found to be fake dell made in china with fake dell logos and never did ever dell produced them in those configurations and loading unlicensed windows 7 on them.

they an establish their own brand but it should be a public-private patnership not just a govt owned cooperation.
they may then lobby to put taxes on imported laptops thus giving them an advantge

Another government production facility? Fantastic !!

Now they can hire thousands of over-paid employees to assemble computers, cost the government millions every month and continue fooling people that S.Sharif somehow, magically, brought them computers.

What a waste of taxpayers' money.
