Process to hand over Anup Chetia begins

The government is in the process to hand over Anup Chetia, detained United Liberation Front of Asom (Ulfa) leader, to the Indian authorities, a minister said here Wednesday.

“We have already initiated the legal process to hand him over to India,” Home Minister Shahara Khatun told reporters after a meeting at her ministry.

Anup Chetia, general secretary of Ulfa, a northeast Indian separatist group seeking to establish a sovereign Assam, was arrested in Bangladesh in 1997 and is under detention on completion of his jail term.

The move followed the recent Dhaka visit of Indian Home Minister P Chidambaram when the Indian authorities gave a list of 50 Indian nationals, who are now allegedly hiding or kept detained in Bangladesh, asking for handing them over to them.

Saying this, Home Secretary Abdus Sobhan Sikder informed reporters that Anup Chetia is on the top of the Indian list.

Bangladesh, meanwhile, handed over a list of 100 people, including two absconding convicted killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and some accused to be involved in the August 21 grenade attack on Awami League rally, asking India to send them back.

A very positive action by the Bangladesh Govt.

India should have no hesitation in starting the process to hand over those who have taken shelter in India.

I was just wondering what would happen if BNP govt was in power?? Would they be cooperating with India in exchanging criminals?? Thank our stars that we installed a dalal stooge govt at the center.

Anyway thanks for your cooperation.

it is written in our constitution to help those who are struggling for independence. So BNP would act according to constitution.

In the book Arthashastra,it's written on both "how to create a nation" and also "put that nation to misery n take down that country...."

Hopefully RAW uses the concepts of that book very well..

The first part of creating a nation has been proved practically n proving the second part is in process...

All the best

It says in the BD Constitution that we are supposed to be anti-Imperialist. I don't remember the details, I was not paying attention in class.

What law are you talking about? India's problems are India's problems. Should we also interfere in Chechnya? Balochistan? Xinjiang? What's in there for us?

Why should we allow foreign armed groups to operate in our territory? I fail to see the logic there. The arms dealing business was a good one.

ALL ULAF, foreign fighters and agents - OUT.

Pro-talk Ulfa happy with Chetia's impending return from Dhaka

The pro-talk group of the United Liberation Front of Asom has expressed happiness that the organisation's arrested leader Anup Chetia will be sent back to India soon. "We are happy with the news of his impending return as Chetia will be able to contribute to the peace process in a big way
as he is a popular and capable leader," Pradip Gogoi, Ulfa vice-chairman told HT.

"The government wants to bring him back, the people of Assam also want it that way, so definitely the prospects of the peace process have brightened."

Gogoi was reacting to media reports on Wednesday quoting Bangladesh home minister Sahara Khatun as saying that the legal process has already been initiated to hand Chetia over to India.

Bangladesh's move has come on the heels of home minister P Chidambaram's recent visit to that country.

India is understood to have handed over a list of 50 Indians who are believed to be in hiding or in detention in Bangladesh. Chetia's name figures at the top of the list.

Ulfa's talks with the government is expected to start in a week's time.

"Chetia was one of the original pro talks leaders back in 1993. We would welcome him if he seeks to reinforce the ongoing peace parleys," said a senior government official familiar with the developments.

Chetia, said to be close to Paresh Barua, the Ulfa's commander-in-chief who is staunchly opposed to coming to the talking table, was the organisation's general secretary when he was arrested by Bangladesh's security forces in 1997.

He is currently under detention in Dhaka after completing his jail term.
