Seeking to enhance its precision strike capabilities, India is planning to replace its 150 km-range Prithvi ballistic missiles with the newly developed quick reaction Prahar missiles.

“We are withdrawing the tactical 150 km-range Prithvi missiles and will replace them with the Prahar missiles, which are more capable and have more accuracy,” DRDO chief Avinash Chander told PTI in new Delhi.

The tactical versions of the Prithvi missiles would be withdrawn from service and will be upgraded to be used for longer ranges, he said.

The DRDO chief said after the withdrawal of the tactical ballistic missiles from service, there would be a gap in strike capabilities in the range of 100 to 150 km-range.

“The Prahar missile would be used to fill up that gap,” he said.

The 150 km-range ‘Prahar’ is a single-stage missile and is fuelled by solid propellants. It was first test-fired by DRDO in mid-2011 from its range in Odisha.

The uniqueness of the missile system is that it can be fired in the salvo mode also from one launcher vehicle in which four missiles can be fired in one go.

This short-range missile would be an ‘excellent weapon’ which would fill the gap between the 90 km-range of the Smerch multi-barrel rocket launchers and guided missiles like ‘Prithvi’, which can strike at 250 km to 350 km range.

The under-development Prahar missile would be offered to the Army for user trials very soon and after its acceptance, it is planned to be part of its Corps of Artillery.

The Prithvi missiles were developed by India under its Integrated Missile Development Programme in the 1980s. The ballistic missile was developed with multiple strike ranges from 150 km to 350 km.

The longer ranges are planned to be in service with both the Army and the IAF.

Thank you for info :)

Right decision

Prahar is more advanced and a solid fuel missile is better for tactical role, though it has less payload

About time...the Prithvi-Is are getting old and need to be replaced with newer, better solid fuel
missiles.

With Prahaar, a single truck can launch upto 6 missiles without replenishment. In Privthi's case
only 1 missile can be carried on a truck at a time. Plus Prahaar is solid-fueled and stored in
canister, which means a very long shelf life and instant launch capability at any given time

Also Prahaar is more accurate and effective in area-saturation roles as well, something Privthvi
is not very effective at. New sensor-fused munitions will come into use on Prahaar too, adding
more punch.

It can make up with numbers and newer, more powerful munitions.

^^ DRDO says Prahar is derived from AAD interceptor missile

Prahaar is a single stage, solid propellant missile with a length of 7.3 meters and diameter of 420 mm. The missile can be launched within minutes in all weather.

The missile weighs 1280 kg and has a 200 kg maneuvering warhead.

It is equipped with inertial navigation, on board flight computer guidance and electro mechanical actuation systems. It has a CEP of less than 10m.

Prahaar uses radar imaging for terminal homing.

The missile is launched from a Road Mobile System, which can carry six missiles at a time and can be fired in salvo mode in all directions covering the entire azimuth plane.

Multiple launchers can beinterlinked to deliver a near simultaneous Multi Axis Attack on the target with devastating effect.

The missile can fly different trajectories and strike targets and different ranges up to 150 km.

Interesting news.

Good News

But, I m Confuse Back in Time they say they don't have Slot for Prahar missiles as The MBRL can hit that Distance(Sure when they are Upgraded maybe in that article they talking about Smerch) ....!!

(Maybe i m wrong .....)

Good news. It will give us more flexibility.

Can prahar Missle carry small nuclear warhead ? If I'm not mistaken prithvi Missle could carry nuclear warhead

Prithvi used to carry nuclear warheads but it has been relieved from that role and reassigned to tactical role after the deployment of Agni series.

Prahar can carry tactical nuke if required but the question have we developed any tactical nuke ??

Yes good question ?

i beleive it depends upon what degree of miniaturization of nuclear warhead india has achieved .Pakistan is rumoured to have tactical nukes .lets see can india do that for Prahar .

If india do that for prahaar ,it going to be an important asset for India's CSD

CHEERS

India should build miniature nukes for prahar to counter tactical nuke threat from pakistan. How difficult it is to built a miniaturized nuke ?
