Five training camps shut down: Pakistan
Five training camps shut down: Pakistan

Over 100 people held or kept under surveillance

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan said on Thursday that it had shut down five training camps and detained or kept under surveillance over a hundred people linked to the Lashkar-e-Taiba/Jamat-ud-Dawah in connection with the Mumbai attacks. It was also setting up a team of its Federal Investigation Agency to probe the incident.

The government, however, said it needed more information from India to proceed with investigations, including access to the site of the terror attacks, and reiterated the offer of a joint probe.

The FIA team will comprise Additional Director-General Javed Iqbal; the head of the Special Investigation Group of the FIA’s anti-terror unit, Khalid Qureshi; and a director in the agency Liaquat Ali Khan, reports said.

In the first official statement about actions taken by Pakistan since the Mumbai attack, Rehman Malik, who heads the Interior Ministry, listed them out: 20 offices of the JuD shut down, as well as 87 schools linked to it, two libraries, seven seminaries and seven websites.

Also shut down are eight disaster relief camps run by the JuD, and five “training camps,” the first time Pakistan has officially acknowledged the existence of such camps.

But Mr. Malik said there was no sign of any training activity at these camps. He did not specify if the JuD’s Muridke headquarters had been sealed. He also left the number of individuals detained unclear.

At first he said 124 “top and mid-level” leaders had been detained, including Hafiz Mohammed Saaed, the head of the JuD, Mufti Abdulrehman, Col. (retd.) Nazir Ahmed, Amir Hamza and Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi.

When asked about Zarar Shah, an LeT operative who is said to have played a key role in the attacks, Mr. Malik, without answering the question, said 71 people had been detained, and 125 kept under surveillance “since the last six months.”

Pakistan was “fully committed” to helping India with the investigations into the Mumbai attacks, he said.

He made an appeal to “counterparts” in India that in order to convert the “information” given by India into legally acceptable “evidence,” the FIA team be given access to the Mumbai sites where the attacks took place.

Mr. Rehman parried a question whether the crackdown meant that the government now accepted the Indian allegation that the LeT was involved in the Mumbai attacks.

Responding to the same question separately, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said that “as for the LeT or any other group, the subject is presently under probe/inquiry by our concerned authorities.” He dubbed as “most unfortunate” recent remarks by Home Minister P. Chidambaram that India could sever trade and transport links.

“Pakistan continues to make every effort to defuse tensions in South Asia and has repeatedly stated that it is prepared to extend its cooperation to the Indian government concerning the Mumbai incident,” he said.

What say? Any word of what is hot in Pakistan about this?

124 held in massive crackdown: Five camps and 20 offices of Dawa, LeT closed; publications and websites banned

By Syed Irfan Raza

ISLAMABAD, Jan 15: The government said on Thursday that it had shut down five training camps of the outlawed Jamaatud Dawa and Lashkar-e-Taiba, banned their seven publications and blocked all their websites.

The authorities have detained 124 people, several leaders and officials of the organisations among them.

Addressing a news conference, the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Interior Affairs, Mr Rehman Malik, assured India that Pakistan would do its utmost to bring the people involved in the Mumbai attacks to justice.

Unveiling details of a massive crackdown, Mr Malik said that training camps had been closed down in Punjab and Azad Kashmir.

Assuring India that sincere efforts were being made to take all non-state actors involved in the attacks to the task, he urged New Delhi to provide access to Pakistani investigators to the scenes of the crimes and jointly investigate the incident so that all those involved could be brought to justice.

He announced formation of a special investigation team headed by an additional director-general of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to examine, “without any prejudice”, all aspects of the Mumbai attacks and the information provided by India. The team will include two officers with counter-terrorism experience.

“Information has been provided by India and we have formed an investigation team to reach the culprits,” he said.

He said the members of the banned organisations who had been detained included their founder Hafiz Mohammed Saeed, Lashkar-e-Taiba ‘operations commander’ Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, Mufti Abdur Rehman, Col (retd) Nazir Ahmed and Ameer Hamza.

“We have arrested a total of 124 mid-level and top leaders of JuD in response to a UN resolution — 69 from Punjab, 21 from Sindh, eight from Balochistan and 25 from the NWFP — blocked six websites associated with the organisation and closed down its five relief camps,” the adviser said.

He said 20 offices, 87 schools, two libraries, seven seminaries and a handful of other organisations and websites linked to Jamaatud Dawa had also been shut.

He said the authorities had closed several relief camps of the organisation after the UN Security Council had passed the resolution.

The publications banned are Mujalatud Dawa, Zarb-i-Taiba, Voice of Islam, Nanhay Mujahid, Ghazwa and Al Rabta.

Mr Malik did not say whether any legal proceedings had been initiated against the detained people.

However, sources told Dawn that the government was considering to hold trial of at least three leaders of the banned groups wanted by India.

The adviser urged India to allow Pakistani investigation officials to visit the country.

“In all such cases the scene of the crime is the starting point from where the investigation is initiated and leads to the culprits behind the crimes are always found from there,” he said.

Mr Malik said the operation against suspects had been launched soon after the Mumbai attacks and the government had responded immediately to the UN resolution by banning Jamaatud Dawa.

“India should wait for the results of the investigation. It will reveal all hidden truths. Pakistan and India need to sit together against their common enemy — terrorists,” he said.

Technically JuD is terrorist organization.

But true it does not talk about the training imparted in those camps if at all.

Its the first time that the Pakistani government has owned up to the presence of terrorists camps on its territory. India should keep up the pressure, the Pakistani government is sure feeling it.

:rofl: You Indians are surely real classic to twist things and news

The government of Pakistan nowhere stated that these were terrorists camps.

The news itself even despite the fact that it is reported by your Indian so-called journalist but still the news says

Also shut down are eight disaster relief camps run by the JuD, and five “training camps,” the first time Pakistan has officially acknowledged the existence of such camps.

JuD technicaly is not at all a terrorist organization. It is a relief organization which had also been praised by NATO for relief work during 2005 deadly earthquake.

Do you agree that APP is an authority in matters like these? I mean to the extent that international newspapers use their reports about press conferences as facts.

PakIndia should sit together against common enemies: Rehman Malik PDF Print E-mail
ISLAMABAD, Jan 15 (APP): Advisor to Prime Minister on Interior A. Rehman Malik Thursday said Pakistan and India need to sit together against their common enemy—terrorists. “We have to prove to the world that India and Pakistan stand together against terrorists because they are the common enemy,” Malik told a press conference.

Something extraordinary is happening to bring Pakistan and India face to face, he said adding both the countries need to cooperate with each other to foil the enemies’ plans.

He reiterated that Pakistan has nothing to do with Mumbai attacks.

“We condemned the incident on all platforms. Pakistan is also suffering at the hands of militants and that is worrying us.”

He said 124 people had been arrested, while authorities had taken steps against 20 offices, 87 schools, two libraries, seven religious schools, and a handful of other organizations and Websites linked to banned Jammat‑ud‑Dawa.

He further said that authorities had shut several relief camps of the outfit following a resolution passed by the UN Security Council.

Malik said Pakistani security forces had also closed five training camps currently run by Lashkar‑e‑Taiba.

“We have arrested a total 124 mid‑level and top leaders,’ said Rehman Malik.

He further said that Jamaat‑ud‑Dawa’s websites will be blocked and their publications banned.

He said a high level investigation team will probe the information provided by India, however he urged India to provide more information to assist Pakistan’s own probe.

The Advisor again called for a joint investigation into Mumbai attacks, saying that would “bring quick results.”

He said India had already handed over some information, but “we have to inquire into this information to try to transform it to evidence, which can stand the test of any court in the world and of course our own court of law.”

To a question Malik ruled out handing over of any Pakistan suspect to India, saying Pakistani laws allowed for the prosecution of citizens who may have committed crimes elsewhere.

Malik didnt say that. that is how the writer put it or understood it. the statement is not in quotes. if u look at my previous post, the statement in quotes (actual words of malik) does not talk about any trainin camps.
his statement is:
“We have arrested a total of 124 mid-level and top leaders of JuD in response to a UN resolution — 69 from Punjab, 21 from Sindh, eight from Balochistan and 25 from the NWFP — blocked six websites associated with the organisation and closed down its five relief camps,” the adviser said.

Whats wrong? Because its not the "training camps".

Live with it.

But that's what is says in the news articles, from Pakistani sources.

The training camps and relief camps are different things, clearly.

Show me a quote. Not what author says. I will fix it, if that is the case. But that certainly isn't the case.
