Picture of the Day

A young pink albinos dolphin was found in the USA :

I'm not disclosing the location but sadly it is on the web so that the animal's safety
and ultimately its freedom are endangered already.

Good luck strange beastie, Tay.

I thought albinos were only white

Well, albinos is supposed to be the absence of pigmentation so
one could think the pink is the basic colour of a dolphin's skin ...
and they'd be right.
The image I gave was too small to show it but the animal has red
eyes which is a marker for albinism and the skin shows blood vessels.
It is the blood in its system that gives those colorations!

Alba or perfect white is the root for albino because our own skin
as humans is rather thick with its 3 layers and that the external one
receives little enough blood save by osmosis ( it breathes air though ).
Thus white is only our species' result from lack of coloration.

And as usual, we anthropomorphize by using it for all others!
Human uncontrolled collective ego again and name carry-over laziness!

Have a great day, persona.non-exe, Tay.

You may have a point here because other than humans the only other albinos I have seen are kangaroos and cockroaches.

Any with the characteristics of your two examples :

  • Any animal without blood flow;
  • Any animal with hair.

In both instances, there is no red coloration in the external tissues.
But check the apparent skin on that kangaroo's nose ... 8-)

Tay.
