Pakistanis freak out over Islamabad U exhibit showing Israeli culture (UPDATE)

From the International Islamic University Islamabad's website on Friday:

International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) is going to hold a three-day event titled “Women International Model United Nations 2014”. The event is being organized by the Faculty of Management Sciences (Female) and students’ advisor office of university which would kick off on Friday (today). The event includes social events, discussion sessions and many other activities.

But something went horribly wrong. From The News Tribe:

A stall showing Israeli culture was arranged at International Islamic University Islamabad; the university administration confirmed that the stall was set up and it has formed a three-member committee to probe into the matter.

The stall for promotion of Israeli culture was arranged in a hall situated in the Faisal Mosque in Islamabad, the capital of Islamic Republic of Pakistan. A ceremony “UN Debate Contest” was also arranged by the Faculty of “Management Sciences Women Department”.

Some students, a few of those from other countries, set up the stall where items showing Israel’s culture were displayed. Banners in the background also showed the Israeli flag as well as pictures of the Israeli premier.

“WELCOME TO THE LAND OF PEACE AND PROSPERITY,” read a banner.

As the news about this stall came to fore, religious bodies, students and political organisations expressed their anger and threatened protest on Sunday (today).

The legal adviser of the University confirmed the presence of stall. The “UN Debate Contest” was also arranged by the Faculty of Management Sciences Women Department where the students set up their stalls of UN member states but the stall of Israel was arranged without permission of university administration, the adviser said.

The stall was closed immediately as it came into the notice of administration.

The local people said that without university administration’s permission it was impossible to set up such stall.

Various student organisations and religious parties said the act was tantamount to adding salt to the wounds of Palestinians.

Outraged students held a protest today, where they naturally burned Israeli flags:

UPDATE:

The International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) has removed the dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences (FMS) and a student adviser who were responsible for a three-day Model United Nations (MUN) event, which began on Friday.

The move followed reports that the university had organised an “Israeli cultural stall”, which began circulating on the Internet and via social media. This drew the ire of right-wing organisations, including the IIUI chapter of the Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT), which staged a demonstration outside the National Press Club on Sunday to condemn the stall.

OP, Israeli cultural exhibits I can agree are harmless. But the kind of response they warranted, though disproportionate and misplaced, is to be expected given all the 'bad press' shall we say?

Aaaahhh Model United Nations....good times....good times indeed ! :)

My team represented Spain once upon a time in a MUN but I can't recall if there was an Israel representation there or not !

MUN conferences are in full swing here too.

Baby killing 'culture' is not welcomed here.
I don't recall any Pakistani who publicly condemned Arabs for seeking to kill Jewish babies, do you?

...the kind of response they warranted, though disproportionate and misplaced, is to be expected given all the 'bad press' shall we say?
"We are Pakistanis and thus we lack the courage to stand up to the mob."

This should be condemned at all levels of society as we don't recognize Israel and they did this in Faisal Masjid. Whoever have done this should be brought to justice as he has violated our law.

How stupid do you have to be host a MUN in Pakistan and then go ahead and make stall for Israel ?

Those students must have known that we don't recognize Israel and there is a reason that our Passport have a tag line on it regarding it, also Qaid-e-Azam also said clearly about Israel so there is no excuse for bring any thing related to Israel in Pakistan specially in a Masjid as those jews want to destroy Al-Aqsa Masjid.

There is a strategy west use to introduce soft corner for their interests in people of other countries, you can see what is happening in ME & Ukraine.

We had a similar event in our University not this big it was just for debates and two of my class mates also chose Israel just for the challenge...no one was really freaked out by it surprised yes but then again we don't have this Jamiat nonsense

ISLAMABAD:
A university has suspended three staff after students created a stall to showcase Israeli customs and traditions as part of a mock UN debating contest, officials said Monday.

Students at the International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) set up the stall, which featured Israeli flags and pictures of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as part of their “model UN” exercise at the weekend.

The display, which also included a banner saying “Welcome to the land of peace and prosperity”, triggered a furious response from right-wing student groups who smashed its contents.

Pakistan and Israel have no diplomatic relations and the Jewish state is widely disliked in the Islamic republic.

The university said the dean of the faculty of management sciences, a student affairs adviser and a female lecturer had all been suspended over the incident.

An IIUI spokesman said the university “strongly condemns” the hosting of the Israel stall and stressed that “a number of resolutions were passed against the Israeli brutalities in Palestine” at the mock UN event.

A female student said the stalls were intended to showcase the religion and culture of various countries alongside a mock UN debate about the situation in Middle East.

Students were coming to our (Israeli) stall, they were talking to us, discussing the cultural things that were on display,” the student told AFP on condition of anonymity.

“Everything was normal until students of the female wing of IJT came to our stall and accused us of supporting Zionism.”

Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba (IJT) is a conservative student organisation allied to Jamaat-e-Islami.

“They attacked the Israel stall and smashed everything, everybody was running out of the hall, it was so scary,” the student said.

The university administration immediately cancelled the event and formed a three-member committee to investigate the incident.

  • Some students had reportedly arranged a stall for Israel which drew the ire of right-wing outfits, including Islami Jamiat Talaba

The stall in question, photographs of which were circulated on social media, was organised by students of the FMS as part of the MUN event. MUNs held around the world feature several debates, committee sessions, as well as social events where teams are expected to showcase the culture of the countries they are representing. This exercise is aimed at contributing to students’ understanding of other peoples and countries around the world, while the debate portion of the event allows them to discuss and thrash out questions of global political significance amongst each other.

A statement issued by the university’s spokesperson, Hairan Khattak disowned responsibility for the event, saying “a few students arranged a stall for Israel without the knowledge and permission of the university authorities. IIUI strongly condemns the incident and no sooner did they come to know about the matter than the programme was cancelled without any further delay.”
