I suggest clubbing it with Vietnam and you can cross into Cambodia in a bus paying just around $10 from Saigon to Phnom Penh - worth it and avoid the capital of Cambodia - Phnom Penh if possible unless you want to see the scars left over by Khmer Rouge(Tuol Sleng prison and Killing fields) - You can spend more time in Siem Reap which is where you things to see.

Yes - Fly into Saigon as it is easier than going to Siem Reap from cost perspective. And you can take Jetstar for around $40 for one way to Hanoi where you can see Hanoi and Halong Bay and take a train to Hue(it is in the middle of Vietnam on the way from Hanoi to Saigon - a overnight train will get you there but worth trying the train).
@hinduguy - here was my travel plan where I travelled to Saigon and flew out of Bangkok.

Did not cover Siem Reap to Bangkok - took a cab(cost me $30) from Siem Reap to Poipet(Cambodia/Thailand border) crossed into the Thailand side to a place called Aranyapratet and took a 8 hour passenger train(similar to what runs in India) to Bangkok.

I have read horror stories about that border crossing.. when did you do it... ?
I think you planned a lot in advance...

I did research for about 6-7 months but no horror stories anywhere - either from Vietnam to Cambodia or Poipet on Cambodia side to Aranyapratat on Thailand side - Do not be fooled by the touts - go to the counter everywhere - Vietnam to Cambodia - the people in the bus will guide you where as Poipet to Aranyapratat - do not talk to anyone but the fellow tourists and just go to counter. On the other side in Thailand, take an auto(it is called Tuk Tuk) to the train station in Aranyapratat. Poipet has Casinos which I suggest not trying out.

I did mine like 4 years back.

By the way I am taking my family and extended family in India next year but intend to club Laos as well skipping Phnom Penh will give me some additional time.

Vietnam's VOA is not so straight forward. One need to get a official letter of approval through some approved Vietnamese agents which you provide in the counters providing VOA in the airports of HCMC, Hanoi or Danang.

Please update yourself. It is pretty straight forward. Visa on arrival means visa on arrival. two pictures, filled up form, accommodation proof (hotel), return air tickets, financial (should have around USD 500 or more). Thats it.

Not sure how you got a visa without Vietnam Visa approval letter.

I have looked up various sites(though no Vietnam embassy or consulate sites have the information) but almost all sites(travel agents and other travel sites like trip advisor and travelfish.org) all state one needs letters of approval.

According the latest policy regulated by Vietnam Immigration Department, Vietnam visa on arrival for Indian citizens is now applicable. However, to get Vietnam visa on arrival, Indian citizens should apply for Vietnam visa approval letter before departure.

Vietnam visa on arrival for Indian passport holders

And the official U.S state department site which guides its citizens for various country visa requirements states for Vietnam visa on arrival one need visa approval letter.

To obtain a written approval letter to enter, you must contact a travel agency prior to departure. U.S.

Vietnam

But it does not matter for me as my government's directions holds good(being holder of U.S passport) but I would rather advice the Indian members here to get a letter of approval rather than getting stuck in the airports in Vietnam.
