KARACHI: Two days after being teased by a 25-second promo, music lovers finally had a chance to witness Fawad Khan’s return to music alongside Atif Aslam and Meesha Shafi.

The music video to the trio’s rendition of a mash-up of Vital Signs’ Do Pal Ka Jeevan and Alamgir’s Dekha Na Tha was released on Saturday to build up hype for the upcoming Pepsi Battle of the Bands. A press release issued on Thursday said the song serves as a tribute to two of the founding acts of Pakistan’s pop scene. Shahi Hasan, one of the founding members of Vital Signs, has played guitars on the track himself.

While Meesha and Fawad are a part of the jury that short-listed the final eight bands, we are still unsure whether Atif will be seen in the Battle of the Bands or not. While all participating bands have something distinct about their showcase, it was the deadly combination of jury members that actually stole the show.

None other so than our chocolate hero Fawad, who was joined by Aaroh front-man Farooq and the uber-talented Meesha Shafi. While all three of them brought a lot of experience and energy to the show, it was Fawad who actually stood out for his playful demeanour and occasional cruelty.

“Fawad had a ball during the show; it was almost as if he has found the lost connection with his rockstar persona. He could be seen around the set, jamming with upcoming musicians, crashing the drum kit and having a lot of fun,” sources told The Express Tribune in an earlier conversation.

Tanya Wells' love for qawwalis has taken her to the streets.

This time, while the British singer was in Dubai, she went for a more informal setting and sang the famous 'Dama Dam Mast Qalandar' on the sidewalk with her twin sister and fellow artiste Nicki Well-Turya. With just a guitar in hand, the man played the tunes while Tanya and Nicki sang out loud and might we add, they were awesome - as always.

Asim Azhar is one of the few amazing singers from Coke Studio who has been wowing us with his melodious and catchy tunes. In the past, Azhar collaborated with Momina Mustehsan for ‘Tera Woh Pyar’ in Coke Studio Season 9. It was surely one of the most popular songs that gained more than 60 million views on YouTube alone. Then it was movie Balu Mahi’s title song, performed by Asim Azhar and Aima Baig that became quite popular even though the movie didn’t do too well on the box office.

Once again, Azhar has collaborated with Aima Baig for his upcoming song ‘Teriyaan’ which will be releasing soon.

Talking to Instep, Azhar said, “I have just wrapped up shooting for an upcoming song ‘Teriyaan’ that will feature Aima Baig. The video has been directed by Adnan Kandhar and I am super excited about this venture. I just can’t wait for you guys to watch the song.”

We still don’t know what the song is all about, so we’ll just have to wait and watch till Teriyaan comes out officially.

KARACHI: In July this year, veteran guitarist Asad Ahmed released his first solo album titled Rebirth. On December 18, he, through EMI Pakistan, released the music video of the album’s title track. The video, directed by Amaan Ahmed, shows the Karavan co-founder in the northern areas of Pakistan playing the guitar amid the mountains and waters.

“The whole premise of Rebirth is that it’s a song about rediscovery,” he told The Express Tribune. “In the video, it’s about me being a wanderer, looking for truth in the vast scenery, whether it’s on a mountain or a boat. It’s basically self-discovery for me.”

The video interestingly shows just Asad walking and interacting and playing guitar in the nature. Nowhere in the video, one sees other human life, as to put the focus on the dialogue between Asad and nature. He explains, to achieve that, they had to travel for hours to find the right spots. “For me, it makes the video very personal. This was my idea. I wanted to go capture these places, not only for the song but because, as much as this is about my self-discovery, it’s also intended to portray a positive image of Pakistan,” said Asad, adding that not many travel to the places, like Passu glacier.

At one point in the video, we see Asad, wearing black, standing on a mountain while the camera aerials back in the sky, blending the guitarist’s body form in the textural background. He explains it was in fact a glacier with a landslide on it. “I kept telling them to hurry up and take the shot because I could feel it melting under my feet. It took four hours of trekking to get up there.”

The 10-track instrumental album, which released in summer, has been receiving positive response from across the world, according to Asad. As to the market of instrumental music in Pakistan, he said this is where digital platforms come in. “In this digital age, we are not just catering to a specific region. The fact that this video will be seen everywhere, once you start being insular and focus on one territory, it would limit us. Right now, as it stands, this album is geared towards an international market, including Pakistan. We have a small instrumental music listening market, but a very dedicated one.”

In an earlier interview, Asad talked about the stories behind all the tracks in the album, which is a culmination of four years of writing and recording. “I feel like Rebirth is me shedding my skin and coming clean. It’s about my rebirth. I’ve extensively worked for decades and while I’m proud of the work I’ve done, I feel times have changed,” he said. “I listen to Pakistani music and I listen to the music produced globally and I see ours is quite outdated. So, with Rebirth, I am saying this is the sound of the 21st century and the future.”

With five studio albums, four seasons of Coke Studio, scores of anthems, multiple international film soundtracks and accolades, the iconic pop-rock band Strings are set to mark three decades of groundbreaking music with the release of eight new singles.

If this didn’t make your day, we don’t know what will!

The powerhouse duo of Faisal Kapadia and Bilal Maqsood, who laid the blueprint for pop-rock via their signature sound and inimitable body of work, will grace us with eight singles to celebrate 30 years of Strings, the first two tracks being Sajni and Urr Jaaon.

The multifaceted duo has been playing together since the late 80s is a true marker in what has become one of the most historically significant bands to emerge from South Asia, ever.

Strings was in fact first formed in 1988 by four members. The quartet signed on with major record label, EMI, to release their first, critically-acclaimed self-titled album Strings in 1990, followed by their second album 2, in 1992 featuring tracks such as Sar Kiye Yeh Pahar that took the country by storm.

Strings disbanded the same year and returned after a hiatus of eight years and marking a comeback with the release of their third studio album, Duur in 2000.

Duur made waves on the Indian music channels and was reissued on the Magnasound label, which has launched pop stars Baba Sehgal and Remo Fernandes in 2002. Following their success, Strings released their fourth studio album Dhaani on the Columbia Records label including a single titled Najane Kyun which was featured as a soundtrack for the Hollywood film Spider-Man 2 in 2004 and also the Urdu version of Spider-Man by Columbia TriStar Films of India.

With that, Strings became the first Pakistani band to ever sing on an international film. Strings won its first international award, MTV Asia’s Favourite Artist India award in 2005 and has continued to win accolades till date.

Strings has also lent their compositions for a number of Bollywood films including Zinda, Shootout at Lokhandwala & John Day. The band released their fifth studio album Koi Aanay Wala Hai in 2008 and also produced the soundtrack for the award-winning Pakistani feature film Moor in 2015.

Strings took the wheels of Coke Studio from Rohail Hyatt to make a debut with Season 7 in 2014 and produced four consecutive seasons till they bid farewell to the country’s biggest music platform last year, but with a promise to return with more masterpieces as they now embark on yet another exciting chapter in their musical expedition.
