Pakistani-American Convicted For Exporting Computer Hardware to Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission

A Pakistani-American man has pleaded guilty to criminal charges in the District Court for the Northern District of Illinois after he confessed to illegally exporting sensitive computer hardware from the US to a top Pakistani nuclear research organization.

He pleaded guilty to conspiring to export goods from the US without obtaining a license from the Department of Commerce and to submit false export information. The conviction is punishable by a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison and a maximum fine of $250,000.

According to details, 66-year old Obaidullah Syed, resident of Northbrook, supplied high-performance computing platforms and servers to Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) between 2006 and 2015.
He also lied to the US manufacturers that the computer hardware being exported from the US was only intended for Pakistani educational institutions. However, in reality, he knew that the end-user of the hardware would be either the PAEC or a research institute that trained its scientists and engineers.
Since Obaidullah misinformed them, the US manufacturers submitted export documents to the Commerce Department which showed false end-users for the US-made goods.
Obaidullah had owned two companies: Pakistan-based Business System International Pvt. Ltd. and Chicago-based Business System International USA.

He conspired with his employees in Pakistan to first export computer hardware from the US without the permission of the Department of Commerce in violation of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and then supply it to the PAEC.
For the unaware, PAEC is a government agency responsible for research and development of nuclear power, promotion of nuclear science, energy conservation, and the peaceful usage of nuclear technology.
Long before Obaidullah exported hardware and software to the PAEC, the US had already designated it as an entity that may pose an unusual or extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, or economy of the country.

Gg boys

Pure Propaganda and non-sense. These so called sensitive computers were OK to given to "EDUCATIONAL Institutions" but not allowed to be given to an Atomic Agency??? What sort of retarded logic is this !! :omghaha: :omghaha: :omghaha:

Ain’t nobody got time for this in DC. It’s not like he was shipping Sierra supercomputer out of Livermore laboratory.

Right. And what happens when lobbyists of a certain country promote it everywhere according to their preferred agenda?
no one gives a shit about us laws.

Of course. Except the one going to jail. :D
So atleast we ourselves should not call our hero and supporters as criminals

As I said above, let Pakistan celebrate him and his heroic acts in violation of US law. But his incarceration and its subsequent fallout will need to be kept in mind, that is all. No problem.

PS: If Dr. AQ was a national hero, why was he under house arrest?

This retarded logic is called "complying with the law". Lax paperwork is often the downfall of many a person, just ask Dr. Fai.

Come on dude, you know very well this is idiotic. It is just racist white supremacists trying to bully a Developing country Pakistan. And this is truth - US is racist and believes in Anglo-Saxon supremacy, and hence it does not like Pakistan or any other country. One prime example is Five-Eye Organisation which is ONLY ANGLO SAXON countries.

Sovereign states must do whatever serves their national interests. Individuals must follow the law in their jurisdictions. These are two different things totally.

Pakistanis must follow the laws as long as pak national interests are preserved and protected .

It's okay. He will be out of jail pretty soon, as has been mentioned above. No problem. The computers are already in Pakistan. He will serve out his prescribed punishment for violating the law. Next chapter to be written, as always.

Seems just excuses. He was exporting for 9 years and they didnt know? Also there are many sellers of servers and powerful CPUs elsewhere. Expect many such stupid excuses.

Can we get the specification for "High Performance Computer ?"

30 GB Ram
1 TB hard drive
2 CPU

??

I can buy a Server with 100 GB Ram easily on open market

Looks like witch hunting , as Old Servers are bought cheap in USA and sold world wide they may appear "HIgh Performance however they are generally 4-5 years old "

This additional info about who was Owner of Company in Pakistan must be coming from FATF based knowledge share from Pakistan

To me the guy seems like general exporter of old laptops and computers

Most of the customs officers in USA are trained to do witch hunt when they encounter a Iranian , Chinese and now it seems Pakistani person

Even when on superficial level we are called "None Nato Ally" who can't even import old computer

Since 10 years or so
  • I have seen , people being asked to specifically declare what they are sending
  • People are asked to submit their personal info name / address
  • Submit their driver license
  • Also detailed info on receiver is being collected
  • Typically red flags are flown when user is from Iran , China and now it seems Pakistan you can tell from the look on the post office workers

These rules were soft in years 2000-2005

Next time we hear the term

NONE Nato Ally , may be Pakistani Authorities should ask US to pardon the people exporting Computers and Tech to Pakistan

It's not like they exported weapons , computers are exported all time to countries which don't make computers like Pakistan

it is the law. silly as it sounds
for starters it is going to be a few months to as much 2 years in minimum security prison. Some of the minimum security prisons for white collar criminals is as comfortable as a upper middle class home in Pakistan

Heroic acts in violation of US Law....? Since which law permits or rectify espionage ?
