Pakistan snubs India over bulletproof car at SAARC summit

KATHMANDU: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has rejected the use of a bulletproof car provided by rival India for next week’s summit of South Asian leaders in Kathmandu, a Nepalese official said Monday.
Sharif “will be bringing his own car… all other vehicles for (visiting) heads of countries have come from India”, said foreign ministry spokesperson Khaga Nath Adhikari.

Adhikari denied the move was a snub specifically targeted at India, whose tense ties with Pakistan have worsened since October over some of the worst cross-border firing in years.
“It’s not that they have refused to use an Indian car… when the US president travels, he also brings his own car, it’s not an issue,” he told AFP.

The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation summit will see the leaders of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Nepal, India and Pakistan meet in Kathmandu on November 26 and 27.
Recent exchanges of fire across the de facto border between India and Pakistan in Kashmir, which both countries administer in part but claim in full, have killed at least 20 civilians and forced thousands to flee their homes.
The nuclear-armed neighbours, who have fought two wars over Muslim-majority Kashmir, have traded blame for the upsurge in firing and shelling which started on October 6.

India called off peace talks in August after Pakistan first consulted Kashmiri separatists, a move some saw as a sign of a tougher stance by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s new right-wing government.

Again confusing the matter by mentioning opposite and conflicting talk, on one hand you accept Kashmir being disputed territory but than if Pakistani talks to the effected people, you cancel the talk, what a hypocrisy.

these are acts of an enemy and yet you expect that Pakistan PM should sit the limo provided by an enemy country, this it seems is based on spinning the matter and shows that Indian is not interested in an honest talk but on delaying by nonsense and confusing acts, real spin at its worst.

But looks like you also consider (or the masses at least) US to be the enemy but at the same time line up outside their embassies for a visa:-)

It's his (or his security team) prerogative. And he is right- the Secret Service does transport an entire fleet of vehicles wherever the President goes.

What many Indians might know is that the SPG does the same for when the Indian PM is visiting certain nations in the region (Nepal,Bhutan, Fiji etc).

On the outside it looks like pettiness but that is pretty much how the Indian and Pakistani side behave with one another.

Initially, Nepal had decided to buy or hire eight high-end bulletproof cars for the summit but due to time constraints, Nepal could not buy them on time. Later, the Indian government came forward for assistance following which Nepal decided to take India`s help, said a senior Nepal government official

Six armoured BMW cars to be used during the upcoming 18th Saarc Summit
Thirty two more non-armoured BMW and Mercedes Benz cars will be hired from India for the summit.
Nepal has to pay over Nepali Rs.13.5 million ($136,160) as rent for the 32 medium range vehicles for 11 days

Meanwhile, Nepal government provided Bullet proof LIMO for Pakistan PM from its own reserve but PM Pakistan will bring his own
as per Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Are these 6 armoured BMWs 760Lis from the SPG's fleet for the PM of India?

edit, after a quick ponder I'm sure they will be.

Indian owned is not an issue, because it is not an Indian car anyway. It's a armored German vehicle. So let's take that out of the discussion here.
Well owned as in the basic premise of what ownership is- the cars ARE owned, transported to Nepal and maintained by India, no one is claiming they are Indian made.

It makes Nawaz Sharif look a bit petty, but it isn't that big of a deal. It's exactly the sought of thing the Indian media would have blown out of proportion if the shoe was on the other foot. Modi might have gone ahead and used a Pakistani car anyway, but the media would have given him hell for it. Unfortunately, it seems both our countries are prone to this kind of silliness.
Nope, not if the summit was in Nepal. The SPG would be bringing their BMWs (and a mobile jammer mount don a TATA Safari) anyway.

We will be providing or rather renting 8 armored brand new BMW series sedans along with 32 unarmored BMW series cars to Nepal for which the Nepali Govt. is paying us with around $132,000.

they cant import their own cars?? they'll be titled to india or nepal?

this is such a weird arrangement.

Nawaz isnt known for having attention span or brains. Perhaps it was his security team that advised him to use his own official vehicle.

This doesn't make an iota of sense. If the visit is to Nepal then why in Gods name would india offer any official vehicle?

I think A 760Li black long body BmW is much more desirable than a "bombproof" hendustan ambassador with 1960s design and not even power steering
Sir, the car offered to Mr Sharif was just that- a 760Li "high security" sedan right out of the Prime Minister of India's official fleet.

For your benefit:

It would be rather ironic if Mr Sharif flew out the very car he was being offered:

he drives the exact same vehicle.....and that too despite the fact that PM office has supply of S550 Benz cars and previous gen. versions acquired under Musharraf admin.

it wouldnt be ironic....though i did think indian would have offered some clankety old "ambassador" car

why they dont call it Hindustan Janitor or Hindustan Chai Wala? Its not appearing to be car for ambassador. No lumbar support, heated seats; no premium audio package, not even power windows :D :D

.
Well the fact is the SPG is bringing their own armoured BMWs (for the PM of India) anyway and the Nepali government don't have 6 armoured BMWs for the remaining heads of state laying around so they turned to India who does (these 6 additional vehicles are coming right out of the PM of India's fleet). Pretty cost effective too.
