ISLAMABAD: ‘Aman ki Asha’ appears to have crept into the corridors of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as for the first time Pakistan invited India to be present during the postmortem procedure of an Indian prisoner.

According to officials in the Foreign Office, the need for a postmortem of an Indian prisoner in Lahore Central Jail arose when Chamel Singh was allegedly tortured to death by inmates two months ago.

“We informed the Indian High Commission to send their representatives during the postmortem as we had nothing to hide. “We are trying to ascertain the truth behind the allegations of torture, and as soon as we receive the postmortem report we will make it public,” an official told The News.

However, according to Indian diplomats, there was no one at the High Commission who was qualified and understood the technicalities of this medical procedure. The spokesman at the Foreign Office on Thursday understood that members of the Indian High Commission had attended the postmortem in Lahore and mentioned it during the regular media briefing. However, the Indian High Commission denied this as did the South Asia Desk at the Foreign Office.

Again, the Foreign Office arranged a special briefing at the counsellor level for Indian diplomats who were unable to be present when a briefing was given to diplomats based in Islamabad about the upcoming general elections in May.

“For some reason the Indian diplomats could not attend the initial briefing held on March 18, so we arranged a special briefing at the counsellor level,” said the official. A briefing was organised to inform all diplomatic missions in Islamabad regarding the policy and procedure of the government of Pakistan concerning foreign election observers.

The briefing was given by senior representatives of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. However, neither the Foreign Office nor the Indian media could confirm whether any election experts would participate from the world’s largest democracy.
