ISLAMABAD: Milk is one of the main source of calcium, which is required for the stability of teeth, gums and bones. But the availability of pure milk has become almost impossible.

This was stated by District Health Officer (DHO) Islamabad Mohammad Tahir while briefing the Senate Standing Committee on National Health Services (NHS) on Tuesday.

“Recently, we launched a campaign against substandard and contaminated milk and checked 70,000 litres of milk out of which 36,000 litres was destroyed as it was contaminated,” he said.

The official said once sellers used to mix water in milk to get more profit but nowadays detergents, chemicals, powder etc., are being mixed with milk to maintain its viscosity, colour and smell.

Mr Tahir said there were issues with both unpacked and packed milk.

Children to elderly people are facing problems of teeth and bones because of a lack of calcium in their bodies as they are not getting pure milk, he said.

“Currently, we are getting substandard milk from Rawat and Tarnol. We have issued notices to 208 milk sellers and arranged 1,317 lectures to create awareness among the citizens about the quality of milk,” he said.

Committee Chairman Sajjad Hussain Turi said a centre should be established to check all the milk coming to the federal capital before allowing its sale.

Senator Noman Wazir said the contract for the supply of milk in the city should be given to one private company so it would check it before selling. The company should also be made accountable in case of any complaint.

The committee decided to hold another meeting on the one-point agenda of milk.

Poultry products
iscussing the issue of poultry products, Dr Tahir said because of the use of steroids in the poultry feed, chicken had become very dangerous for consumers, especially children.

Senator Ashok Kumar said because of the currently available feed, hens cannot survive more than eight weeks.

Dr Tahir told Dawn that tea whiteners did not have nutritional value of milk and the government had very rightly decided to mention on the packets that they were tea whiteners.

He said the citizens can also check the quality of milk by lactometer which costs only a couple of thousand of rupees.

So whose company would that be ? Which politician ??

That's the recommendation the esteemed senator came up with

Let me guess the next suggestion: Hand it over to the Army! :D

(which is equally bad, BTW.)

I won't be ashamed to tell you that there is nothing lacking Here, this an agricultural country, we have brain drain phenomena too and for a good reason.

Each person is corrupt to the capacity that he can make other squeeze, the higher the capacity the higher squeezing power. Govt come from same people my good doctor and not from mars.

If you personally ask me, we should have more corrupt and tyrannical form of govt, this so what we deserve and, until such time that we mend our dealings, we will continue to suffer the same fate as bani Israel

Let me guess the next suggestion: Hand it over to the Army! :D

Nope Ned to burden the army. Keep the morally bankrupt society as such.

If they don't want to get fixed no one can help them

What can I add to the above? Nothing, actually. :D

Let us not forget that India is the largest milk producer in the world with annual production of 146-milion tons.

Milk is an important source of nutrients, especially of calcium. Unless you have lactose intolerance, drinking more milk during the child-hood / adolescent years is extremely important for building strong bodies.

Per capita consumption of milk in Pakistan is only 159 Kg per year. In my opinion, one should not even think of exporting milk until such time every Pakistani child drinks at least one glass of milk each day.
Yes but keep in mind that India is a larger country in both size and population.

Pakistanis drink more milk than Indians on average

It can also have something to do with the fact that Pakistanis have a high percentage of lactose-tolerant population, much higher than India.

A lot of room for improvement... and tech based added value

My family having dairy farms, I have to admit a lot of milk does get wasted.
You should think of other milk processed products for the excess milk such as cheeses, powdered milk, ghee etc.

ISLAMABAD: Only two out of 200 milk companies surveyed by government officials have been declared safe to drink.

The figures were revealed on Monday by officials of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Pakistan Standards and Quality Control during a briefing to Standing Committee of the Senate.

The officials said that in October last year, they had been given the task of checking the quality of milk. Of them they found only one company in Karachi delivering safe milk to consumers.

The committee asked officials to submit a report to the Senate committee over unsafe milk companies within a month.

A report on unsafe milk companies in Punjab by the provincial food authority pointed out that chemicals like formalin and sugarcane juice were being added by companies in milk. The report was submitted in the Supreme Court Lahore-registry on December 27.

Why don't the two brand disclosed as being safe to drink?? Scared of the milk Mafia?

The ultimate story with Pakistan is how much we waste
  • Milk Production #4 in world but prices of milk quite high and milk products like Cheese not present in staple diet people are still using powder milk items like Nido
  • River flows millions of gallon of waters daily out to sea and we don't have a means to preserve drinkable water not even a initiative to make tankers or preservation tanks to save up drinking water.
Money is wasted on Sugar/Tea on daily basis which does not adds much from nutritional stand point of view

One of the most massive wastes we do is stuff like Pepsi or Coke which is expensive as anything and is #1 source for many illnesses down the road
