Pakistan ranks fourth in the world with 42 million tonnes production of milk every year but remains far below in exports of dairy products when compared with its contemporary counterparts, reported Roznama Dunya on Monday.

The US tops the list followed by India, China, Pakistan, Brazil, Germany, Russia, France, New Zealand and Turkey.

Pakistan is surplus in milk production but it is least commercial enterprise due to lack of proper planning in collection, transportation and distribution chains.

Millions of litres of milk is wasted on daily basis due to the absence of value addition method and processing facilities.

Major milk producing animals are buffaloes contributing about 73 percent to a total milk production followed by cows at 24 percent and four percent by goat and sheep, respectively.

The dairy sector contributes 11pc in Pakistan’s gross national income whereas the business volume of world’s largest dairy company equals 11pc Pakistan’s gross national income.

Analysts say Pakistan must strive to earn its place in the international market in accordance with its size and production. They urged the government to take immediate measures for the betterment of dairy sector at earliest.

Now that's a stat worth quoting.

I doubt MILLIONS of litres are wasted..

Pakistan Dairy Milk sector offers lots of space and incentives for International companies to benefit from the presence abundant milk production but lack of safe packaging and processing for most of the milk produced and that is why we have seen entrance of one of the worlds largest dairy product company FrieslandCampina with Revenue €11.4 billion (2013), in Pakistan.

There is plenty of space for more entrants and surely they can collaborate with already present companies and Pakistan can surely benefit from high amount of exports of Dairy products.

Let us not forget that India is the largest milk producer in the world with annual production of 146-milion tons.

Milk is an important source of nutrients, especially of calcium. Unless you have lactose intolerance, drinking more milk during the child-hood / adolescent years is extremely important for building strong bodies.

Per capita consumption of milk in Pakistan is only 159 Kg per year. In my opinion, one should not even think of exporting milk until such time every Pakistani child drinks at least one glass of milk each day.

What storage system does Pakistan have my friend?

Yar no idea about rest of the country. But the farm I am talking about has some sort of deal with an MNC and they send out those big *** bowsers to collect milk and take them back to their storage depots or processing plants.

If you take out water from that milk, we probably go down to 10th spot

Lol good one.

ISLAMABAD: Only two out of 200 milk companies surveyed by government officials have been declared safe to drink.

The figures were revealed on Monday by officials of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Pakistan Standards and Quality Control during a briefing to Standing Committee of the Senate.

The officials said that in October last year, they had been given the task of checking the quality of milk. Of them they found only one company in Karachi delivering safe milk to consumers.

The committee asked officials to submit a report to the Senate committee over unsafe milk companies within a month.

A report on unsafe milk companies in Punjab by the provincial food authority pointed out that chemicals like formalin and sugarcane juice were being added by companies in milk. The report was submitted in the Supreme Court Lahore-registry on December 27.
