Sikhs ask Pak to fulfil promise of setting up Guru Nanak Varsity

Sikh pilgrims from India and other parts of the world, who are in Pakistan to take part in events marking the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, have asked the government here to deliver on a 4-year-old promise of setting up a university in Nankana Sahib, the birthplace of the founder of Sikh religion.

The pilgrims told the media they would press the government to set a deadline for the inauguration of the Guru Nanak University.

Officials of the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB), which manages the shrines of minority communities, and even federal ministers have told Sikh pilgrims over the past two years that the Prime Minister would lay the foundation stone for the university. However, no action has been taken so far to start work on the varsity.

"This time we will tell (the ETPB chairman) that if the government wants to win the hearts of Sikhs around the world, then he should announce the date for the groundbreaking ceremony," Sardar Swinder Singh Doblia, a leader of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), was quoted as saying by the Express Tribune newspaper.

Sardar Bishon Singh, former president of the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, said "Sikh 'sangats' from across the world have assured the government of Pakistan that the cost of the university will be borne by the Sikh community. I cannot understand why the process is lingering on like this."

According to the ETPB, former premier Shaukat Aziz had announced on June 15, 2006 that the government would build the Guru Nanak University.

The ETPB then allocated 360 acres for the varsity. In 2007, in a meeting with the Sikh leaders, government officials said the allocation of land for the university had been increased to 2,500 acres.

ETPB Chairman Asif Hashmi set up a project management unit for the university in December 2008 and appointed officials to work for it last year.

The federal government approved Rs 50 million for the project management unit but has not yet approved Rs 75 million for a feasibility study.

ETPB Additional Secretary Syed Zahid Hussain Bukhari said construction work would start once the approval is received from the government but he did not know when this would be done.

Doblia said the SGPC had told the government last year that it had set aside a lot of money for the construction of the university.Bishon Singh said the university would initially offer courses in languages like Gurmukhi and social sciences before starting natural science programmes.

Earthquake, terrorism, tensions with India(2008), more terrorism, COIN Ops in FATA and Swat, floods, economic meltdown......etc
DOES IT LOOK LIKE WE ARE IN A POSITION TO SET UP UNIVERSITIES ?
We are too busy trying to live through the day !

I think this thread is useless because I hope Indians realize that our current govt isn't fulfilling promises to our majorities, how do you expect them to fulfil promises for our minorities?

...

First the title of the thread is misleading………it should be “Sikh asked GoP to fulfill its promise.”………..there is no minorities involved here……….and secondly, “setting up a university” by their name is not a fundamental right of any minority…….its just a courtesy towards minorities……..so, they cannot "push" the GoP to do so..........but if GoP has promised than it has to be fulfilled.

arent sikhs Minorities in Pakistan?
True it is a courtesy so that is why they are going to ask again for the university

I think this is a very good thing if sikhs want to build a university in pakistan. It will help the nation to lift itself in education.

Just because government is not doing things, does not mean the people should not do things either. That will be a lose lose situation.

Not only sikhs but hindus and christians and parsis should also think of doing such things in pakistan as well as muslims of pakistan. After all we are all as much pakistanis as each other.

Anything any minority does in pakistan that is good for the country must always be supported by all regardless of government help. In fact it will be better for us to speak with one voice to get government to act. We should not let the government off the hook by way of silly excuses rather make the government move with people for the gopod of the people.

The minorities that stayed in their places during divide are a great people who are true citizens of the respective states. These people did take a great risk under the circumstances at the time.

So does Govt fulfulling the promises with Mijorities, why can't I see ^o)

We all are the part of same nation, so stop dividing Minorites from Mijorities

The university will be built once the government is out of its own political mess.
So far the current government is battling with own foolish mistakes.

Many development projects have been slashed in KP as well due to recent floods as the money allocated for ADP had been diverted to flood relief

Can some Indian's post any positive news about Pakistan for a change...?

Clearly not.

that would be asking for too much; you know how many of them have flooded on here --some of which are previously banned members

best just to ignore them as they have nothing better to do with their time

Irrespective of Sikh, Jain, Hindu, Muslim aspect, I wish our government is efficient enough to build universities in large numbers which is not the case btw.

It was promised by Shukat Aziz and you know he is no more.

with new governments in place you know well the entire process for everything starts from the zero once again.

Can non-Pakistanis, specially Indians stop posting such things???? What happens to Pakistani minorities is up to Pakistanis. If they feel that it is harmful for their country they will raise it or start a thread.

Thanks.

Actually this university should have been near completion by now, the project itself was going to be funded by Sikh diaspora and the GoP.

Well the Sikhs did their part but our shameless, useless and corrupt government is lagging behind as usual.

The funds are there, the plans have been prepared and approved so what's the problem.

We need to get rid of Pir Gillani and that Zardari asap.
