NEW DELHI: Army has brought out heavyartillery to fight the growing problem of obesity within its ranks. A new set of instructions said overweight personnel were a "public embarrassment due to slovenly appearance in uniform".

Stung with observations from the top echelons of the government on the expanding waistlines of some officers, the Army HQ has prescribed stringent steps to check a "trend on the increase". "The issue has serious ramifications, not only affecting combat readiness but also leading to avoidable ailments resulting in reduced life span in addition to public embarrassment due to slovenly appearance in uniform," the instruction, sent to all commands on August 8 read.

The instructions for 'enforcement measures to help check the menace of obesity' have been sent for comments to all Army Commands. Officers and soldiers will be subjected to an annual obesity evaluation examination in case they 'appear to be overweight' and a set of photographs would be attached to their evaluation files.

Among the methods prescribed are a bar on overweight personnel to be considered for foreign postings, career courses or even tenures at 'A Class' cities. Overweight personnel will not be allowed for reemployment and would lose out on career advancement. Sources told ET that the crackdown is a personal initiative of Army chief Dalbir Singh, who is known for his exceptional fitness who still finds time to run 10 km daily.

Comments were also made on expanding waistlines by top echelons of the government at an event in the Capital earlier this year.

I used to remember Pakistan Army had obese personnel but now it's very rare and only among high-ranking officers.

As bhutto said: Fat and Flabby Generals.

This is not unique to India or Pakistan.
But generally western forces have their commanders in generally good if not fit condition. Not just for how they look, but obesity leads to many other problems that can effect their performance at their tasks.

Canadian police used to have this problem, so the government stepped in and started a fitness program. They forced officers to choose between having a job, and getting fit; Fat cops are now very VERY rare in Canada.

Yup, no nation wants a military head that could die of a heart attack any moment.

indian cops have very bad lifestyle... half the time eat street food.. and have long working hours..(the problem is mainly with inspector or lower ranks who are always in the field).
but armed forces got canteen or homemade food, i dont see why they cant keep fit.

Multiple reasons, low pay, lack of training, lack of government initiative...etc.

It's not controversial to say that police in South Asia are under payed and under trained. With such lack of motivation and professionalism, they're obviously going to get lazy and fat, not to mention highly corrupt. Give them something to work for, and give them the proper tools and training to get the job done. Make exercise mandatory, and give a timeline to them to lose a certain amount of weight, or else they lose their jobs.

change food no oily food or chilliy , fizzy drink, sweets,. should be healthy breakfast like oat meal, lunch time can be tuna salad tomato cucumber, brown bread, milk, raw orange or pomegranate.

but my research says bluberry, goji berry, mulberry, hemp, flax, oat, wheatgrass, barley, camel milk, ostrivh meat and egg, honey walnuts. of course it not cheap but on big scale it is i think state should provide.

curry/somosa/kebabs lassi, jailebi, is bad very oily. on top of that the drink tea or coke cola gulp bhai aur drink plz nai seven up dai do.
