ISLAMABAD: Pakistan does not have to follow a tit-for-tat policy in the event of fresh nuclear tests by India as it is capable of protecting its

interests, foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said on Wednesday.

"We do not have to follow a tit-for-tat policy. We have to do what is in Pakistan's interest," Qureshi said on the sidelines of an 'iftar' he hosted for journalists at the Foreign Office.

Responding to a question on Islamabad's likely response if New Delhi conducted further nuclear tests, he said: "Pakistan is capable of protecting its interests."

Qureshi said there had been speculation about India conducting further tests since a leading Indian defence scientist had questioned the success of the nuclear tests carried out in May 1998.

"There is a debate going on in India though no decision has been taken as yet (by the Indian government)," he said.

Once India makes a decision, Pakistan will examine it and give its views, he said.

India's nuclear tests in May 1998 were followed closely by atomic tests by Pakistan. Since then, both countries have maintained a moratorium on further tests.

Pakistan's Foreign Office recently said it was "disturbed" by reports that India could be preparing for further tests.

Is he serious!! there is no way the GOP or the army can avoid tit for tat tests as the public would be baying for it, not conducting test's will only lead to increased tension and probably a change in government. And i think we can expect a thermo nuclear device to be tested by pakistan if india tests again.
Thank you.

I think PAF and PN will object to tests as we are finally waiting for the stuff which we should have ordered a decade ago (New Submarines, AWACS, Jets, BVR) so i guess they might ask army to not test the damn thing and army will advise government on this matter. We have a lot of stuff delivery in the pipeline and this is not the right time..We need to get all that stuff.

Yes you are right, but emotions will be running high and it will be very difficult to control the general population. The same is true in india, if pakistan test's then probably india will test too. In the end it's a political decisions and nuclear test's certainly boost the incumbant government's popularity at least in the subcontinent.

He said we will do what is in our interests and this moment indeed advance tech for the forces is in our interest while on the other hand if India tested and we delayed we would not be able in the future to conduct a test without any side affects aka sanctions, either.

So basically we are in a position like between the devil and the sea.

Political popularity is one thing but more importantly when one country conduct a test and the other follows shortly then its all due to favourable atmosphere which is created by the frist one so its easy for the second one to get away with the same

Actually india wants Pakistan to conduct a test.It is india's dream come true

there is no point in testing thermo nuclear weapons even if india does so.we are a nuclear state and no body should or will ever doubt our ability to make thermo nuclear weapons.and its not that any country would want a 10-15 kt fission weapon to fall on its cities so fission weapons are quite a good deterrent.

and lookng at the scenario my sixth sense says that pk will not go for nuclear test even if india goes for a new series of tests.

I think this is wise thing to do right now, what is the point for another test. World know that we have what we have so no point of showing off.

india need beter or best or whatever we are step by step with you don't worry last time india 6 pakistan 7 score this time india 10 pakistan 15.as your own indian media pakistan is fastst growing its nuclear waipons in world.

thats only if india and pak on same position. America worried about india's nuclear weapons or pak's nuclear weapons? India will get away with it because india are in far better position and growing rapidly. Pak really cant get away. Pakistan is in america's grip.

forget that you would get away with nuclear tests.you will just ruin all the economic progress you have made.it would be ideal for pakistan if india goes for the tests and pakistan does not follow cause then all the sanctions would be coming your way.

and few less things for pakistan to worry about.no western mrca's no p8's

go india go!!!:yahoo:

Sir, nobody is going for new tests. Currently India is focused on its economic development. Conducting new tests will be suicide for this. Also there are no concrete reports about these, only speculations so far. BTW, PFO gave the statement on the basis of speculations!!:what::what:

And what do you think what happened in 1998. Yes, there will be pressure on Indian government. But we are at far better position this time. If we have done then, there is no reason why we can not handle things this time. Also we haven't put all our eggs in single basket. There are other countries like Russia (for example) which is there for our help. I agree we would suffer but certainly not to that extent which is projected here. Thanks.

Again, you started a XYZ vs ABC contest.

You forgot about 1974 test which makes our count better. If at all, we conduct new tests the gap is going to be higher. But I think India is not going to do this. We are concerned about economy at this moment.
