No F-35 for India

The Indian Defense Secretary on Wednesday dismissed the possibility of India planning the acquisition of a fifth generation fighter aircraft, alternate to the Russian PAK FA.

Pradeep Kumar, who is the top civil servant in the Ministry of Defense told reporters that, while the agreement for design and development of the PAK FA is expected to come through with Russia, after the Indian Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) approves the details, “You can’t have two types (of fifth generation fighters).

Pointing out that the US was, even now, working on the development of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, Kumar categorically repeated, “There is no question of having two fighters.”

The Indian Navy, in a Request for Information (RFI) for carrier-borne fighter aircraft issued last year, had asked for information on the F-35 from the US defense and aerospace major, Lockheed Martin. The company, along with other vendors, had made presentations on the aircraft to the navy, but presumably, the idea of acquiring the F-35 has gone no further than that.

The Defense Secretary also ruled out the possibility of acquiring any of the embattled British Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers, one of which will not carry fighter aircraft and is to be mothballed three years after commissioning. “Why would we buy one?” he asked, adding that India was on track with its aircraft carrier program.

Speaking on the upcoming visit of President Barack Obama to India, he indicated the Ministry of Defense to be still studying the issue of signing agreement like the Communications and Information Security Memorandum of Agreement (CISMOA), Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement (BECA) and Logistics Support Agreement (LSA) with the US, saying, “Our people should also feel it should benefit us.”

India is contemplating the purchase of 10 C-17 Globemaster III aircraft for USD 5.8 billion, six additional C-130J Super Hercules aircraft, in addition to the six already ordered for over a billion dollars, and four additional P-8I long range maritime aircraft for over a billion US dollars, in addition to the eight already on order for USD 2.2 billion. Besides this, India is conducting trials for the purchase of the BAE Systems-built M777 Ultra Light Howitzer through the Foreign Military Sale (FMS) route.

There is no necessity for this plane as considering the hypothetical case PAKFA is basically built to counter the F-22 ( I'm not telling which is superior )and we also know that the F 35 is inferior to that of F-22,
So according to me even in the worst case it can challenge F-35 for sure.

And also considering the IAF plea for their requirement for such wide range of platform for the various air crafts, It's better to stick to the plan.

Even if there are plans to buy this one, it will be under wraps.

I still remember when just 2 years back both India and Russia rubbished reports of India taking on lease a nuclear submarine from Russia.

IAF has its own reasons to not go for F-35 but I am sure Indian Navy will be more than happy to go for VTOL and STOVL categories of F-35.

what will be best choice for our indigenous aircraft career when it will inducted ,,,
more mig 29
rafale
f 35
LCA-N

Now if lca is on his way then why navy issue a RFI ,,

again f 35 is only stealth plane soon available for navies
our own fifth gen fighter still take time and and then fifth gen fighter for navy will take more time again ..
should we weight or buy some other fighter (f35 or rafale)??

PAKFA cannot compete f-22 or jsf
because Russian are far behind in micro processor technology

Great news! What'd be the use of having state-of-art fighters that stay on ground more than they're in the air, those that are under the eyes and noses of Lockheed Martin officials more than they're under our own engineers and pilots?

Rather than buying this high-cost riddled fighter, we're better off jointly-developing, learning and independently developing fighters that would give more autonomy to IAF and IN-Air Arm.

I also was concerned about the potential purchase of the cost riddled new British aircraft carrier that was almost 4 times that our our independent carrier that was mulled some months back. Rather than paying $ 5 billion for a single carrier and then issuing another $ 5 billion tender for more foreign aircrafts to be based on it, it would be better that our shipyards perfect carrier technology at the estimated $ 1-2 billion per carrier, wait for 5-8 years more and induct Naval PAKFA that Russian Navy is also considering as a replacement for Su-33s apart from MiG-29Ks.

Indian Navy will operate mix of Mig 29 k and LCA tejas naval version on INS VIKRAMADITYA [ gorshkov ] which will be commisioned in 2012....

Navy has planed to build Indigenious aircraft carriers [ vikrant class aircraft carriers ]......the first one INS Vikrant a STOBAR carrier currently built at kochin shipyard will also operate a mix of Mig 29 k and LCA tejas will be commisioned in 2014...

The second one said to be named INS vishal a CATOBAR carrier over 65000 tonne will be operating a new set of aircrafts....for which navy has issued request for inquiry....Russian mig , french dassualt , swedish saab , eurofighter typhoon , f 18 , and f 35 are the jets the navy has issued RFI for......

we will be having FGFA and AMCA 5th gen fighter for AIR FORCE.....so i see no problem if INDIA purchase small no of F 35 for navy.....or if no F 35.....we can opt for dassualt rafale or F 18....

Kya baat hai!
Sakshat professional hamare saamney hai!

Its directly made to compete with F-22 raptor and F-35 L-2.
And after modifications and further development it could well even surpass them.

"The current prototype is Sukhoi's T-50.[12] The PAK FA, when fully developed, is intended to replace the MiG-29 Fulcrum and Su-27 Flanker in the Russian inventory and serve as the basis of the Sukhoi/HAL FGFA project being developed with India.[13][14] A fifth generation jet fighter, it is designed to directly compete with Lockheed Martin's F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II.
