06/05/2022

By Shafique Khokhar

Solemnly inaugurated by Archbishop Joseph Arshad, the church is located in Rawalpindi district, home to many industries, near the archaeological site of ancient Sirkap. Before, “there was no church in Taxila,” said Fr Shamaun, the new parish priest. “It is a true miracle [. . .] after more than 25 years of battles”. The church will draw locals but also pilgrims.

Taxila (AsiaNews) – On Monday, Archbishop Joseph Arshad of Islamabad-Rawalpindi, together with priests from his archdiocese, solemnly inaugurated and blessed the new Catholic church of St Thomas the Apostle, in Taxila Cantonment, Rawalpindi district, Punjab province.

According to tradition, Saint Thomas arrived in the area in 33 AD to preach the Gospel to the poor. Today, Taxila is known for its heavy industries in the defence and engineering sectors.

After blessing the doors and the altar, the archbishop led the Eucharistic celebration in the new church in the presence of a large number of nuns from different congregations, as well as catechists and worshippers.

Saint Thomas is considered the Apostle of Asia. Historical sources indicate that after the resurrection of Jesus he reached the area of present-day India and Pakistan where he worked as a builder and was greatly admired for his skills.

At that time, King Gondophares ruled the region from his capital, of Sirkap, which today is an archaeological site on the bank opposite the city of Taxila, 35 km from Islamabad.

For Fr James Shamaun, the new parish priest, the place where the church was built is close to where the apostle used to preach.

“The inauguration of this beautiful church is a historic moment; previously, there was no church in Taxila. We all prayed and celebrated in the open air,” he explained. “It is a true miracle that God has given us this land and after more than 25 years of battles, the project was approved.”

With the Church of St Thomas completed, Archbishop Arshad thanked Fr Shamaun for his dedication to getting it built for local Catholics and future pilgrims who will come from near and far.

“We are grateful to Saint Thomas the Apostle for choosing this continent and harvesting the seeds of faith in our land,” said the prelate. “Today the completion of this church is a test of the faith of the people.”

The annotated map below makes this clear. The church is within the modern capital of Pakistan and metro region Islamabad. Taxile which in antiquity was often ther capital of this region is today a suburb of Islamabad.

Correction 'Pakistan'. India did not exist then. King Gondopheres's realm is almost copy map of Pakistan.

So traditionally St. Thomas is believed to have preached, practiced and died in South India - around the region including Muziris, Calicut and Goa today. Syrian Christians of Kerala traditionally consider him to be their founder.

“According to the 4th-century Ecclesiastical History of Bishop Eusebius of Caesarea, he evangelized Parthia (modern Khorāsān). Later Christian tradition says Thomas extended his apostolate into India, where he is recognized as the founder of the Church of the Syrian Malabar Christians, or Christians of St. Thomas. In the apocryphal Acts of Thomas, originally composed in Syriac, he allegedly visited the court of the Indo-Parthian king Gondophernes, who put him in charge of building a royal palace (he was reportedly a carpenter); he was imprisoned for spending on charity the money entrusted to him. The work records his martyrdom as having occurred under the king of Mylapore at Madras (now Chennai), where San Thomé Cathedral, his traditional burial place, is located.”

Wow, I didn’t know that Apostle Thomas made it to India. There is so much that I still have to learn and so much that’s still hidden from me.

Jesus Christ came to India
This is in Pakistan. Tell me is Romania same as the Romans? Or is it Italy? Even if the name conflates with Roman/Romania everybody knows Italy was the home of that empire and NOT Romania.

Or are Romas same as Romans? Look where Taxila is?

I am not surprised. Jesus Christ came to India and became the disciple of a Buddhist monk. There is a Buddhist temple in Kashmir which has the proof of Jesus's stay in India. According to the Christian biography, Jesus was missing for decades when he was a youth, but when he returned to his home in Jerusalem, he already had supernatural powers. According to new studies it is possible that Jesus was not missing but he went to India to meditate with a Buddhist monk and he gained arahantship for which he had the powers to conduct miracles such as walking on water.

So it is possible that Jesus already knew the route to India and sent his disciples like St Thomas to preach his new religion in India.
