ISLAMABAD, Pakistan A suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden vest inside a mosque in northwestern Pakistan during midday prayers on Friday, according to government officials, apparently striking at worshipers who denied support to the Taliban.
Officials estimated the death toll at around 50. At least 70 people are injured, said Shahid Ullah, a district official. Many are in a critical condition.
Pakistani news media reported that the Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.
According to initial reports, a teen-aged suicide bomber struck worshippers during Friday prayers at 1:40 p.m. in a village in Darra Adam Khel, about 25 miles south of Peshawar, the provincial capital.
The roof of the mosque collapsed after the blast, leaving dozens of worshipers stranded under the rubble. Several neighboring houses were also damaged.
Local news networks broadcast images of rescue workers and villagers rushing to the site of the attack to help the wounded and retrieve bodies.
The injured were ferried to hospitals in Peshawar and Kohat.
Darra Adam Khel was traditionally known as a center of weapons manufacturing. But in recent years, militants have gained strength there and have often clashed with law enforcement officials and the Pakistani Army.
The attack on Friday seemed designed to punish local elders who resisted the influence of militants in the area and raised a private militia to oppose them.
Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani condemned the attack.
Militants have no regard for any religion or creed. They are pursuing their own agenda which is based on self-centered ideas and dogmas, said a press statement issued by the prime ministers office.
