Mastercard, a leading technology company in the global payments industry, on Wednesday announced a strategic collaboration with Pakistan’s National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) Technologies to optimise national ID cards with an electronic payments functionality.

The move will allow citizens to carry out financial transactions and receive government disbursements by utilising the unique 13-digit identification number of their identity card.

Citizens will also be able to use their National ID to send and receive domestic and international remittances, eliminating the requirement to physically visit a bank branch or currency exchange house to meet their money transfer needs.

Under the terms of the agreement, Mastercard will also use its next-generation payment processing technologies to process all online payments made by Pakistani citizens for the issuance of National ID cards, passports or any other document provisioned by NadraTechnologies.

The announcement was made during the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2017, taking place from January 17-20 in Davos, Switzerland.

Aurangzaib Khan, Mastercard's country Manager for Pakistan and Afghanistan, said: “Our collaboration with Nadra Technologies is a testament to our commitment towards building a reliable and secure ecosystem for online payments in Pakistan."

"The new service will make international remittances more convenient both for the sender and beneficiary, and this is significant since Pakistan is one of the top receivers of remittances from abroad," he added

"Combining the National ID card with payment features will transform it into a powerful, multi-purpose channel for citizens to carry out financial transactions, and will facilitate faster and more efficient delivery of vital government services,” Aurangzaib elaborated.

Yes why not embed another pathway into Nadra... Seems compromised enough what can be the harm now.

Security Risk , the National ID database will be compromised

Credit cards are routinely compromised and companies change the ID number routinely it is very common practice

So will the NADRA center change the card if Theives will steal you Nadra (card number) for purchasing online etc

When someone will buy an item online , the company selling will get copy of the # used to buy the product and that number will be a known Pakistani ID card !!!

Fakesters will be able to churn out copys of NADRA numbers and abuse the system we will have scenario where people will start to see criminal transactions being registered under their IDs with out even their knowledge

There is a reason why world wide , National ID numbers are protected and credit card numbers are kept seperate

Alot of US companies have data centers in India so you can rest assured the RAW will get a nice copy of NADRA database over certain period of data collection indirectly

They should combine this with something like the Plastc card and that will become truly the only card u would ever need to carry.

Check it out at www.plastc.com

To make it more secure, it can take a cue from the "Final card". The final card can issue a one time transaction data and then change it the next time making each transaction unique.

Check it out at https://getfinal.com

I so wish my ID can become something like that.

This has a lot of security implications..using a national ID number as a credit card number can produce rampant identity and financial theft..

National ID number should also be the tax holder number. It will be easy for FBR to tax non-tax payers after this modification of law.

Excellent idea ... financial support and health insurance can be paid directly into id cards withouy embazelment from 3rd party

This sounds like a bad dream. If true, then NADRA are hopelessly clueless about the debate surrounding privacy and security. Either that, or someone's lining their pockets. And judging from the scale of the project, it has to be someone high up.

Exactly my thoughts, why let them access our citizens data by tagging it along credit card data. We must protest and oppose this.

Yes why not embed another pathway into Nadra... Seems compromised enough what can be the harm now.

They only have to access minimal data... like that on credit card to make it functional... no need to share whole family tree...

As for finnancial embazzlement, dont allow online or cash machine transactions...

Debit cards are never hacked its always credit card...

For extra security put bio matric verification... like required to get mobike sim in pakistan..

Its the way forwatd

Unfortunately , "credit cards" routinely get stolen , and normally every person will experience 1-2 times their card was stolen

So typically how people retaliate is by deleting the credit card number and issuing a new card

Can this be done with "National ID card" used as a credit card for transaction ?

Not really once your number is compromised someone can make fake cards or even open bank accounts with that number

When you use your unique number (National ID card) for purchasing stuff , that number is compromised as it is distributed world wide where ever you will purchase stuff.

If someone abuses it (criminal or gang) you are done , as your identity would be stolen and you won't be able to replace that easily as to my understanding NADRA card numbers are quite unique

Let me put it into prespective
NO where is the "National ID number" used for transaction

Not in USA
Not in UK
Not in Canada
Not in Australia

No where becasue every one likes to protect their private National ID numbers as these never change
