Master Plan 2030 to get legal status next month

KARACHI: The first master plan of Karachi would be presented in the city council session next month for approval. After that it would become a legal document and all the institutions in the city would be bound to adopt it, said City Nazim Mustafa Kamal at the inaugural session of a seminar Wednesday.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) organized the seminar on “Towards A Vision 2030: Direction of Industrial Development in Pakistan”.

The city nazim said that Karachi would enter a new era of development after the implementation of the master plan.

“Karachi is not an ordinary city but possesses special importance and status. It is the seventh biggest city in the world and contributes 68 percent of the revenue of the country,” he said. “Unfortunately, the city had been functioning without a master plan for the last 59 years; The city was run on ad-hocism.”

The CDGK has given the task of preparing the master plan to a private firm that completed the task within a year. The master plan includes suggestions from the president of Pakistan to the nazim of a union council in addition to the representatives of all stakeholders.

Kamal said that the city was facing a number of problems due to the dilapidated condition of its infrastructure. He said that the civic conditions also create hindrances in foreign investment.

“Keeping in view the importance of Karachi, the city government has started the development process. Due to the ongoing development, businessmen from different countries are now coming to Karachi. They have invested $900 million in the city,” he pointed out.

He claimed that not a single government in the past tried to develop the city’s infrastructure or highlight its importance. “We have informed the world that Karachi is not only the hub of Pakistan but also for the region. Investment in the city would facilitate all countries in the region that need to transport their products to different countries of the world,” he said.

Economic activities and the industrial development have increased in the city due to the efforts of the city government, he said.

Dean and Director of the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) Professor Danishmand presided over the seminar. Consul-General of Japan Nakano Shouichi, International Development Center of Japan Senior Economist Professor Hisaaki Mitsui and Institute of Developing Economics Japan Assistant Director Professor Hisaya Oda and others spoke at the seminar.

Previously, five master plans were prepared for Karachi, including those in the pre-Partition era but none of them was implemented completely.
