Major Modernisation at Skardu Airbase

Have seen Mirages,F16s,F7s and Thunders exercising there a lot. Hopefully it will become a major base.

An old video
There was a news somewhere back regarding thunders that they might have a problem specially under full load operating from Skardu due to thin air and shorter wings. But if F-7s are operating than thunders should not have any problem either.

The Indians started panicking last year, regarding the upgrades at Skardu.

My friend India panics or not is pointless we are upgrading airport for civilian flights. People need this a single land slide cuts the roads & this is a requirement which is essential for people. The current flights are bumpy cause larger air crafts can not land. The new air port will also help tourism economy.

This will be much better if PA raise a new corps in Gilgit Baltistan which is much needed at the moment.

Better invest that money on procuring attack helis and jets.

The upgraded runway will be 1.2km & facilitate Airbus aircraft this will bring Skardu in reach of many. Along a better airport we need better roads & more hotels there as well.
An amount of Rs 12 million has been provided for construction of barrack accommodation for 64x (ASF) Airport Security Force personnel along with Mess and allied facilities, ladies rest room, store, Kote Magazine, quarter guard, and OC accommodation/room at Skardu airport, while Rs two million for provision of same facilities at Chitral airport, against allocation of Rs30 million and Rs 20 million respectively.

The plan to upgrade it has been seeing yes & no for long mamy time it saw yes then no then yes again.

A320 already flies to Skardu and only plane PIA has bigger than an A320 is 777.

The FOB Skardu is 7500ft above the sea level, with the nearest Indian airbase Leh 200 Km away housing a detachment of the MIG-29s from IAF squadron no 28. In the past few months a major base overhaul has been going on in Skardu, including construction of a new parallel runway and a built up of enhanced fuel storage capacity along with new ammunition stores.

With recent Indian claims on GB, there was a need for a major upgradation at Skardu, to fill the aerial defence gaps in our Northern areas . With this modernisation the base will provide Pakistan strategic capability extension in the region, defence over the CPEC projects and counter any enemy misadventures.:pakistan::pakistan:
I believe planes will be station here permanent now no more FOB its good move.

This is not Airbase Modernization that twitter account is wrong. :disagree:
Google earth calls it "new airbase Skardu". It seems they are separating the civilian airport and creating a parallel airbase. It's quite hidden in a valley between the mountains and a few SAMs and a protection force on the peaks should be sufficient to protect it. It will be hard work keeping it going in the winter and will stretch the definition of all weather planes.

On a separate note looking at Kashmir on Google Earth it's astonishing to see how beautiful landscape it is for guerrilla warfare and it is surprising why Pakistan haven't taken the IOK valley yet. It's even more surprising why the freedom fighters haven't focused on the Indian army supply lines entering the valley and starved the Indian army out.

Not only we need to upgrade strike profile of Sakardu but we need more airbases/air strips in the area. A simple Google Earth Survey will give you an idea what Indians have done on their side. Have no idea, why we always shy from doing what needs to be done! Land logistic routes are cumbersome to those areas particularly in Winters, we need places where we can land C-130s and fighter jets both with ECMs and Pins for fighter jets along with service hangers.

It's time to apply the Afghan model to Kashmir and kick the Indians. Whole of Kashmir both Azad Kashmir and IOK should be referred to as northern Pakistan. The western maps have always shown it as NE Pakistan but google earth shows it clearly it is direct North Pakistan and Srinagar is in North Pakistan. If India can put a million troops there we should put 2 Million to kick them out.

I notice on Google Earth that Srinagar airport is a dual civilian / military air base:-

Seems like the entire Indian army is based at Srinagar airport. All around are just military buildings.

We don't have logistical support base of 50K troops let alone millions there. Remember it, We are at disadvantageous position viz a viz India all along the LOC. V few places where Pakistani posts have higher ground and in those places, our route to top is long one. Without any strong logistic and airlift capability, army will never be able to do anything other than engaging in long range artillery duels.

Think solutions , there is always a solution to a problem. I notice the Indians have control over the ring of mountains around IOK. We need identify key peaks and take them step by step using special locally trained resources where possible.
