on a serious note US cant abandon F-35 program now...
not to mention it supports thousands of jobs and many companies are running because of this program.

and besides once they start full scale production it will pay back all the money they spent in a decade or so!

It will be interesting to see how many F-35's they will buy in the end. US had once plans to buy at least 750 F-22's, but it didn't go as planned like everyone knows. Same story with B-2.

So far only F-117 has been actually succesful stealth plane project.

Average cost of aircraft would come down once they start exporting it to other countries. Right now export may not be the plan because F-35 are still new but once other countries like China and Russia would start manufacturing 5th gen aircrafts, US would have to start selling these aircrafts to NATO and other countries. Japan may also be interested in buying these aircrafts at some stage.
