Srinagar: Kashmir observed a complete shutdown on January 26, the63rd Republic Day of India on the shutdown call given by the Valley's separatists.

Chairman, Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani had asked people to observe a shutdown on the 63rd Republic Day of India and had urged to observe “India's Republic Day as a Black Day in Kashmir."

"People should observe the strike from 4 pm January 25 to January 26 evening. They should hoist black flags with the slogans of Go India Go. Though India claims to be one of the biggest democracies, however, it stands exposed as it has snatched the right to self-determination of Kashmiris since past 63-years. India has no right to observe or celebrate its Republic Day,” Geelani had said.

Meanwhile, all Kashmiri separatists had endorse for a shutdown call on the January 26. The strike call received a positive response from the Valleyities.

Security had been intensified across the Kashmir Valley to foil any attempt of untoward incident on the celebrations of January 26.

On Thursday, the roads leading to Bakshi stadium and various other venues were the January 26 celebrations were being held were completely sealed.

The roads wore a deserted look across Srinagar and other major towns in the Valley while shops and other business establishments remained closed. The traffic remained off the roads in the Srinagar city, while skeletal traffic moved in the far-flung areas.

Mobile service was also blocked for a few hours which brought immense inconvenience to the people. The services were resumed after the celebrations ended here.

Mahesh, a tourist from Mumbai told Agence India Press that, "I could not talk with my family to convey my Independence Day greetings as the service of all the mobile service operators has put off mobile connectivity for few hours across Kashmir." (AIP NEWS)

Indian troops use brute force against protesters in Srinagar

SRINAGAR, (SANA): In Indian Occupied Kashmir, the troops of Indian Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) damaged several vehicles including the vehicle of a senior reporter of an English daily without any justification after failing to disperse an anti-India demonstration at Habba Kadal in Srinagar.

A group of youth defying restrictions took to streets at Main Chowk in Habba Kadal and chanted pro-liberation and anti-India slogans. The CRPF and police personnel used brute force to disperse the protesters. The troopers broke the windowpanes of vehicles including that of chief reporter of daily Rising Kashmir, Abid Bashir.

Residents of the area talking to media men strongly condemned the incident and the damage caused to public property by the troopers. Media fraternity, editors, photographers, videographers and reporters also expressed serious concern over the troopers’ action besides denouncing it.

Meanwhile, amid tight and unprecedented security measures, on January 26 (Republic Day of India), black flags were hoisted at Gojwara, Nowhatta and other areas of Srinagar city.

Kashmir celebrates Republic Day with ardour

Srinagar/Guwahati, Jan 26 (ANI): Marking the nation's 63rd Republic Day, people and government leaders of Jammu and Kashmir celebrated the occasion with patriotic fervour in Srinagar on Thursday.


State Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather presided over the grand function that saw the attendance of scores of enthusiastic residents, who thronged to the venue braving the chilly winter breeze.


A wave of patriotic exuberance swept across the venue as Rather unfurled the Indian national flag, while the tune of national anthem reverberated in the backdrop.


Security personnel deployed in the strife-ridden valley gave a guard of honour to Rather in an elaborate parade march that drew applause from the audience.


Addressing the gathering, Rather expressed joy at the significant decline in incidents of violence in the past year.


"Fortunately, the situation in Kashmir is gradually returning to normal. It is good that peace is returning to the region. The year 2011 was the most peaceful year in the last 20 years. We saw peace and normalcy in the Valley," said Rather.


In Guwahati also people observed the Republic Day with high spirits.


Amid tight security, Assam Governor J.B.Pattnaik unfurled the national flag in front of scores of spectators.


In his address, Pattnaik reflected on the initiatives taken by the state government in curbing insurgency and conflict in the restive region.


"Counter-insurgency operations against active militant groups and peace overtures for people willing to come forward for negotiated settlements has paid rich dividends which has been reflected in the suspension of (violent) operations," said Pattnaik.
