KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghan President Hamid Karzai threatened Sunday to send Afghan troops across the border to fight militants in Pakistan, a forceful warning to insurgents and the Pakistani government that his country is fed up with cross-border attacks.

Karzai said Afghanistan has the right to self defense, and because militants cross over from Pakistan "to come and kill Afghan and kill coalition troops, it exactly gives us the right to do the same."

Speaking at a Sunday news conference, Karzai warned Pakistan-based Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud that Afghan forces would target him on his home turf. He is suspected in last year's assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

"Baitullah Mehsud should know that we will go after him now and hit him in his house," Karzai said.

"And the other fellow, (Taliban leader) Mullah Omar of Pakistan should know the same," Karzai continued. "This is a two-way road in this case, and Afghans are good at the two-way road journey. We will complete the journey and we will get them and we will defeat them. We will avenge all that they have done to Afghanistan for the past so many years."

Neither government officials nor a spokesman for the Taliban in Pakistan could immediately be reached for comment.

Karzai has long pleaded for Pakistan and international forces to confront militants in Pakistan, but has never before said he would send Afghan troops across the border.

U.S. officials have increased their warnings in recent weeks that the Afghan conflict will drag on for years unless militant safe havens in Pakistan are taken out. Military officials say counterinsurgency campaigns are extremely difficult to win when militants have safe areas where they can train, recruit and stockpile supplies.

Karzai said in recent fighting in the Garmser district of Helmand province — where hundreds of U.S. Marines have been battling insurgents the last two months — that most of the fighters came from Pakistan.

His comments come as Pakistan is seeking peace deals with militants in its borders, including with Mehsud.

The deals have come under criticism from U.S. officials, who warn they will simply give militants time to regroup and intensify attacks inside Afghanistan. But Pakistan insists it's not negotiating with "terrorists," rather militants willing to lay down their arms.

Of particular concern is whether the deals will address militant activity inside Afghanistan.

Mehsud, who is based mainly in the South Waziristan tribal area, has said he would continue to send fighters to battle U.S. forces in Afghanistan even as he seeks peace with Pakistan.

U.S. and NATO commanders say that following the peace agreements this spring, attacks have risen in the eastern area of Afghanistan along the border.

Interesting statements by Karzai. For those who "wish" to see the US role in Afghanistan as somehow beneficial to Pakistan, ought to review the statement by Karzai - he does not, cannot, even take a crap without US approval, and this statement, well... live and learn.

There is no afghan army. it is indian army wearing uniform of afghan army.
They very much can come in from voids and terrorise locals.
It is already established from the history of occupied kashmir that how much capable indian army is in killing civilians.

Pretty strong words!

Does he have an army to back it up with action?

How big an army he has, how strong? Do they listen to him?

Has he no belief left in the Pakistan government's ability to deal with the situation on it's side?

Its an indirect statement from the US, whoes pay roll is Karzai on.

Thats right - gotta kill Mehsud and Mullah Omar - they lead on the front lines, behind every attack.

We killed Nek Mohammed, and got Abdullah Mehsud.

We killed Abdullah Mehsud and got Baitullah Mehsud.

The issue isn't the Taliban or AQ leadership.

Interestingly enough, not a word on attacking the "homes" of the drug lords running his government and the drug trade financing crime and the Taliban.

Oh thats right, we have to see how long narcotics production levels keep breaking records - in the interest of science perhaps.

Didn't Pakistan manage to completely eradicate poppy from its territory, including the Tribal areas several years ago?

And we are to believe that NATO and the US cannot put the resources together to achieve the same. Or don't want to achieve the same...

You have to wonder what cut NATO gets out of this.

Bhai Interceptor... Comment please.

This is salt on wounds. When will we develop a spine! At least Musharraf went in your face with this low life trash.

Let's see what is Zardari going to do?

You are not telling me the US army follows his command! Are you?

What was earlier India's problem, is now world's problem. "Eradicating the roots of terrorism".

If "hot persuit" is opted by the US forces, the terrorists have nowhere else to hide but P-O-K, which is nearest from NWFP. And if a 9/11 like incident repeats, P-o-K will be the bulls eye.

Wonder where is Osama bin laden hiding. Who knows, he might be in washington DC !!

I am just tired of their singularly one dimensional policy in Afghanistan.

All they want is "more operations in FATA and then some more operations in FATA".

Military solutions is the only thing they can see, or at least what the US can see.

I said before that the Brits tried negotiating with the Taliban, and got shot down by the puppet and the puppet masters. Interestingly enough, almost every statement from British leadership and officials is supportive of the GoP's current efforts in FATA.

What efforts have been expended on development and cutting the sources of financing for the Taliban?

None, because the Karzai regime cannot act against the warlords and drug lords who are part of it.

So, as Muse said elsewhere, the buck gets shifted to Pakistan...

Hot pursuit won't starve the Taliban out of FATA - the US cannot even starve them out of Afghanistan, where they (the US) have complete control.

The most that they can do, and which they are doing, are limited strikes on targets (the Predator strikes) or the occasional bombing when they engage the Taliban.

But the bombings when engaging Taliban will almost always occur within Afghanistan or close to the Afghan-Pak border (as in the Mohmand incident) since the Taliban have to engage NATO within Afghanistan, and that will mean that they will not have the space or time to retreat into Pakistan.

Therefore the Taliban will continue to operate primarily from within Afghanistan, with some incursions from FATA.

Anyway, military operations alone are never going to resolve the issue - there are several other factors in play, none of which the US seems interested in dealing with...
