JF-17 Thunder Multirole Fighter [Thread 4]

Pt-06 being tested rigorously with different things (SD-10, Cruise missiles, satellite guided bombs etc) at Chengdu along with J-10B & J-20 both of the future CAF front line fighters do give an impression that FC-1 is being seriously looked into and being tested as a CAF future fighter jet also. There is no other explanation for the jet being tested so rigorously.

And here is the FC-1 with the smoke winders :)

It seems CAF is very serious in acquiring the fighter.

im pretty sure they are not smoke winders.
they are some sort of pods to collect data throughout the flight (my guess)

you can see this F-16 is also carrying them, while testing AIM-9X.

if they are smoke winders why are they fitted in inner hard point, that doesn't make any sense.
but they look exactly like Chinese smoke winders.

confusion confusion ... first thing tun out to be camera and second one ... ??

Not sure about that, heard from some Pakistanis source claiming blk 1 still do not carry SD-10 and the fact we never really see one JF-17 carry it. But there is indeed picture of pt06 carry SD-10 flying around. Therefore , most likely pt06 maybe forming the basic of blk 2.

Block 1 did have some integration problem, but that was solved at PAC.
This was confirmed by Eagle Hannan.

And PAF never disclose their capabilities, not to forget, the AIM-120 was yet a mystery till the 5th Squadron personnel 'leaked' the pictures. ;)

DangerZone.

Please go through last few pages and you will find another possibility. :)

this is prototype 6, not the block 2, many new technologies/ weapons/ subsystems have been tested in this aircraft. Blk 2 is yet to be revealed. There are a few external changes on antennae array and some other external differences from blk1. More composites are added replacing metallic parts but we cant identify them by merely looking from a good distance.

Do you know the time-frame of when Blk-2 will be revealed?

I ve been through already and Taimi's point on Data pod is quite valid.
Had it been a data pod, then one would have been enough, not 2 on both the pylons, the other wing has the same thing.

we should wait until some one from Chinese side confirms it as Data pod or Smoke winder.

A Close look at the EW Pod and also the nose of the aircraft, which doesn't look any different.

A pod mounted on the external hard point, will it not effect the maximum number of payload it can carry specially in A2G mode.

It is an Camera POD, recording J-20 Catwalk .. Flight, Sorry. :D Its not an EW Pod.
Nothing have to do with original JF-17 weaponry list, but it can be counted as EXTRAS.

With so many others to chose from, why would the Chinese use a test bed to play the "Chase" aircraft....??

I believe it is a camera pod – the coincidence that the same flight that the pod appears for the first is the same flight that on the #06 is the chase plane for J-20.
However, the camera pod seen on the J-10 does not have an antenna underneath. It seems there is a slight difference between the J-10 “camera pod” and the FC-1 “camera pod”.

All three there are test beds (JF-17, J-10, J-20) and they both (JF-17 & J-20) might be in some kind of testing phase.
besides Timber Wolf did some great work with Solid proof.

I myself thought it as IRST pod because of its close resemblance to PAC IRST pod.

Any way you can see Camera Head in the bubble here, if u zoom it a little.

Vey good point that smoke dispensers will not be mounted on inner pylons - they would be on wingtips.

I think it makes sense that they have a common shell (where possible) for the ACMI pods and smoke-dispensers. It makes things cheaper as they will have common parts and also less modifications on the plane.

A potential development of medium-weight stealth fighters by 2020 would cap an expected decade of more intensive export offerings. While the export effort is led by Chengdu’s FC-1/JF 17 cooperative program with Pakistan (which could acquire up to 300 fighters) and the fighter could yet be purchased by the air force, greater international appeal may follow its being equipped with a Chinese engine—a likely near-term prospect.

also from hasnains article in the J-10 section, updating prospects for the FC-1/JF-17.

The 'smoke winder looking' pod is something similar to US. AMD/AMA pod which is used to increase radar echo. The optical sensor mounted on the front of EW pod doesn't make sense, it has to be a Terrain radar/Nav pod ( something similar to this pod. )
