Iraq purchases Chinese HQ-9 air defense

Deal for Russian S-300, local T-90 production etc.. seems to be dropped for HQ-9, MBT-3000 local production and other equipment as China was willing to sell on credit whilst Russia wasn't. Or they dropped the S-300 for the HQ-9 and they're going ahead with local T-90 assembly/production (still unclear).

Our blog has already reported about the possible purchase by Iraq of the Chinese anti-aircraft missile system of medium and long-range FD-2000. Resource « East Pendulum » in the article « l'Irak prépare un contrat de 2.5 of Md USD avec la Chine? » Provides further details of the story.

For example, the overall size of the package of contracts between Iraq and China reached US $ 2.5 billion. Part of this money is a government loan. It is noted that although Iraq's Russia was a candidate number 1 and had planned to put the seven battalions of S-300, as well as proceed with the project assembly in Iraq (Basra) T-90S tanks. Russia's refusal to provide financial resources forced the Iraqis to turn to the Chinese side. Iraq's Council of Ministers must approve the selection in 2017 of advance payment of $ 833 million., Followed by a contract with the Chinese will come into force. I prefer to support the central government of Baghdad, and our governorate (Nineveh Plains) will be tied to Baghdad, and I do have distant relatives still in Iraq, they want to return to their homes in Bartella, and the other relatives I have that are living in Baghdad are planning to build homes in Bartella as well. They did a poll of the Assyrian IDP's and found out that all of them will return under the conditions that they have an area of their own in which their privacy is maintained.

There are also talks of Iraqi-Assyrians who have lived in Europe for a decade or more that they will also return once the Nineveh Plains governorate is established.
welcome back home bro Iraq in need for his people like you.

According to Iraqi sources, the country is in the last negotiating stages to seal a $2.5 billion arms purchase deal with China. Sources added that Iraq turned to China for weapons after it could not reach a deal with Russia to buy weapons on credit.

The weapons being considered include air defense systems such as the HQ-9, which is the Chinese equivalent of the Russian S-300.

China’s third generation main battle tank, the Type 99, is also being considered to be included in the deal.

A miniature model of the Type 99 was seen at the desk of the ministry of defense earlier but there are also mentions of VT-4, though that tells they're looking at either for local production if cleared for export.

Janes Reports the deal.

Likely the air defense topology based on 7 HQ-9 systems, years ago when Iraq was seeking the S-300 they suggested 7 systems which would be sought in thiis case s well. SAM systems placed at airbases & strategic sites in the case of Pantsir S-1 units.

Black = HQ-9 (200KM range)
Red = Pantsir S-1

Weird time to opt for sophisticated long range air defence systems. It seems the more urgents needs would have been to provide salaries to politicians and soldiers alike and purchase basic needs. I cant imagine these systems would do any good for Iraq without a proper air defence network and infrastructure.
