Maragheh observatory:
Built in 1259 after 5 years of construction was for over 100 years one of the biggest and most important observatories in the world.

Men of mathematics, science, and astronomy came to the Maragheh Observatory from across the world. According to texts recovered from the observatory, the site had a reputation so widespread it had reached as far as China as students had traveled to study mathematics, physics, and astronomy

how it looked like 750 years ago

The Maragheh observatory was excavated by the Iranian archeologists in 1972. The work was commissioned by the University of Tehran and university of Tabriz. A dome was created to preserve the excavation site.

Nasir al-Din Tusi was the lead Persian astronomer and mathematician and first director of the observatory. Tusi was born in the city of Tus in Khorasan in the year 1201.

Latest photos of the BAM citadel restoration work..the site is no longer in the endangered list and a new lake and half million palm trees are now showcasing the site.

SAADAT School
One of Iran's oldest modern schools in the Persian gulf city of Bushehr..Built in 1898 this was one of the first Iranian school to bridge ancient Iranian learning schools and new modern day schools. This school apparently became famous from Arabia to India to zanzibar in Africa.
So glad to see it is preserved and renovated with care

This structure needs to be restored.. build it to its original shape before it is too late

The ONLY foreign made historical architecture in Iran is in Qeshm Island in Persian Gulf..named in latin as "Fort of Our Lady of the Conception", also known as the "Portuguese Castle".

Built 1507 by Portuguese naval commander Afonso de Albuquerque. The island was taken back by Persin forces of Shah Abbas with help from the British.

Capital of Persia for 230 years (500 to 330 BC)..A massive 33 acres complex of Places and terraces..a world heritage site

Iran's ancient Highway Rest Stop:

Vakil Caravanserai (road inn) in desert city of Kerman one of the largest in Iran..

Note: I have been there when going to school for few years in Kerman..Iran has all these historical jewels that could earn the country Billions in tourism income I am glad they are preserved..ALL is needed foreign tourists to come but that is another story

Wonderful. Unfortunately Iran does a terrible job of maintaining and promoting its historical sites like this. Persepolis, Lake Urmia, dozens of abandoned historical buildings in terrible condition, etc.

Iran should work closely with experts from Italy, Japan, etc to not only restore but also explore reconstructing many of these sites. Who wants to visit that random circular slab of mud/rock? But if it is reconstructed with original materials and advertised correctly, then it could be different.

Maragheh observatory that I covered few pages back is not far from Tabriz and makes sense to have been affiliated..this circular structure is indeed puzzling..seems to have been a base for something.. but my guess is as good as yours.

Wonderful reconstruction..PERSEPOLIS deserves a thread of its own..many Iranians inside Iran should be able to watch these reconstruction videos to understand what our ancestors achieved and why we Persian are so proud of it. Control of half of the known world was done done from PERSEPOLIS.

Indeed. The Getty reconstruction project and website is beautiful. What a shame that we have to rely on the USA to promote our history.

Perhaps there are many reasons that render it infeasible (cost, materials required, lack of authenticity), but a major reconstruction of Persepolis would be a harbinger of a significant Persian cultural revival.

It is really disgraceful that the Mausoleum of Reza Shah, for example, was destroyed after the revolution. It did not belong to them to destroy. Even as a strong critic of Reza Shah, that is part of Iranian history and should be preserved at all costs; preservation does not imply support. Should the Mausoleum of Imam Khomeini be destroyed by a successor to the IRI? Of course not.
