Indian Army set to place order for 248 more arjun main battle tanks

Guys Guys Guys..... A bad news is here, sorry to have bothered you!!

Army's Future Main Battle Tank (FMBT) project likely to be delayed

BANGALORE: Army's futuristic tank programme is likely to be delayed, with the military still procrastinating over its requirements, more than six months after it was scheduled to hand it over to the country's defence research establishment. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is yet to receive a critical document listing the Army's technological and combat wish list for its Future Main Battle Tank (FMBT).

The DRDO was keen on finalising the design for the ambitious project by 2013. No indications have been provided by the Army as to when it will hand over the Preliminary Specifications Qualitative Requirements (PSQR), which is seen as a sanction to kick-start development activities on the FMBT. "The draft PSQR finalised by a former DGM is now being refined by the newly-appointed DGM. Nothing has been finalised yet, and we have not even started any discussions on it," said P Sivakumar , director of Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment.

The document, which is expected to provide a clear technological roadmap of the country's much-vaunted next generation battle tank by broadly listing its main features, is the precursor to the General Staff Qualitative Requirement (GSQR) document, which in turn, details its exact features. Due to the delay, drafting the GSQR document would go beyond the year 2012-13.

In September 2010, the CVRDE director had told ET that the Director-General of the Army's Mechanised Forces has communicated that the PSQR would be sent to the DRDO by December last year, once the army gets the necessary feedback from its various divisions relating to the FMBT. In order to ensure that it hits the ground running as and when it receives the green-light from the Army, the DRDO has decided to start work on the tank project based on the previous draft PSQR. "We are working on the design, based on the draft PSQR. But unless we get a clear confirmation, we will not be able to start action on the development side," Sivakumar said.

The design and development of the FMBT has been conceived under a rather tight timeline set by the Army. The DRDO has been told that it will have to finalise its design activities by 2013.

The country's military, which has projected a need for about 1,200 FMBTs, has indicated in no uncertain terms that it expects the tank to go into production by 2020. Initial development costs for the project, which is seen as crucial for the country's future battle readiness, has been estimated at Rs 1,500-crore.

The Indian Army's desperate need for stateof-the-art tanks has been well documented, with a significant portion of its 4,000-strong fleet populated by largely obsolete, nightblind Russian-made T-72 tanks, which have been in service for more than 30 years.

Its battles with the DRDO, marked by the Army's reluctance to induct the Arjun Main Battle Tank, have only recently subsided after the country's first indigenously-built tank comprehensively outperformed its current showpiece, the T-90, in war-games conducted last year. Sivakumar rubbished claims that the FMBT programme was to be shelved, and hence the delays by the Army. "It will definitely not be shelved, because there is a critical requirement," he said.

Yeah, there was a time when the IA had even sabotaged the Arjuns and got caught in the black box installed in the tanks. But they are now totaly messed up in the armor section and the tanks are inferior to Pakistani tanks. So it is the army now who wants the Arjun mk2 inducted.
REGARDS....

So I never compared their armor.

First you contradict yourself.

Then, fail to prove how Pakistani tanks are better in armor than Indian ones.

After that, you compare the wrong category of tanks :

The T90S and T 72M1 are inferior to their Alkhalids and T 80UDs.

As I said earlier ... more talk than work.

Lo,gai vayns pani mein. What the hell!! Now again the DRDO will be probably bashed something they are not guilty for.

Oh god!!By armor I meant to say about tanks themselves, not about tank's armor.

T-90 makeover: ‘Bhishma’ set to be more lethal

Will include new weapon system that will to enable the tank commander to fire a missile to neutralise mid-air an enemy missile or grenade

The Army’s main battle tank, Russian-origin T-90 christened as ‘Bhishma’, is being upgraded under a modernisation project that will improve the lethality of the 46-tonne war machine besides improving its rate of survival in a real battlefield environment.

New Delhi has finally okayed a project to include a new weapon system on board the existing tank that will enable the tank commander to fire a missile to neutralise mid-air an enemy anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) or a rocket-propelled grenade. Despite the steel armour and specialised armour protection kits, a hit by an ATGM usually leaves a tank paralysed and at times totally damaged.

In the past one year, there has been speculation in the defence circles that India was re-looking at its earlier proposal to have an “active protection” suite for its frontline T-90 series of tanks. The Army has now made it official and sent out a request to global manufacturers inviting them to display the system.

A similar effort was made in 2008-09 and six global companies had participated in it.

The “active protection” is a proactive countermeasure to tackle incoming ATGMs and rocket-propelled grenades. In modern day battlefields, the biggest threat are anti-tank missiles that can be shoulder fired ATGM’s, also those fired from infantry carried rocket launchers and from helicopters.

Militarily advanced countries like the US and Russia have such methods that give a definitive edge in battle, said a senior functionary.

Now-a-days, rocket-propelled grenades are no less in threat. It can penetrate several inches of a tank’s steel-plated armour. The alternative is to increases the armour thickness that will add up to the weight of the tank making it sluggish. The best option is to have an active protection that tackles incoming threats at distance away from the tank ensuring safety of the crew and also the tanks in the same squadron.

Ideally, the Army is looking at a new weapons system that will not increase the height of the tank and impact its capabilities to wade through water. Height is an issue as the Army moves its fleet on trains across the country. The new system is likely to be top mounted on to the tank.

Glorious

The Army has so far deployed the T-90 along the country’s Western borders in Rajasthan and Punjab. Historically, the Army has been engaged in pitched tank battles on the Western front. Use of the T-55 and the PT-76 in Bangladesh in the 1971 war stands out as the sole exception. India will have 1,650 T-90 tanks in the next few years

You see.Even the Ajay Banerjee told about APS.The T90S will use the LEDS 150 aps as IA rejected the russian Arena. But has the T90S been equipped with it??Because Alkhalid I has Ukranian Varta aps.
And Alkhalids can also engage gunships.
You could have told it in a bit more generous manner. It seems you don't have got any manners.

so now army has to think about inducting Arjun in greater numbers. it is good tank and no problem of ToT as it is built by India. any way i dont think army will induct more than 400 arjuns.

248 (earlier total)+248 (This one) = 496 Arjuns. That's a huge leap from the initial refusal. The DRDO had mentioned that it could break even for Arjun MBT if the Army purchased 500 tanks minimum. Guess IA reached close to the proposed amount. 4-5 tanks less won't make much difference. This means DRDO has got a break even for the first time which is quite a record. Guess this is where it all begins to change slowly. Arjun even in MK1 is fierce tank and has proven its ground. Don't think we need more explanation than its test results.

Heh...funny, but won't rain on your parade.

We've umbrellas for that too. Go on, don't hold it in.

Actually, Arjun would have been a great tank if it was inducted in the late 90s. Now, its just a so so tank.

The best tanks are only built in China & Pakistan, they have years of experience in designing, manufacturing & operating them. Indian tanks are so so tanks, whenever Indian tanks faced Pakistan tanks in war India lost. Even in 71, India lost war & large parts of its land....

That is why MK I Arjuns have defeated T90s in the trails last year. FYI. all MK I Arjuns will be upgraded into MK II.

so so tank

Arjun is a formidable tank, not a junk and the pakistanis know it very well. That's why some of them here are suffering from BAS(Burning A++ Syndrome).

Actually the only problem with arjun and other DRDO projects is that the services do not cooperate properly with the technical organisation.there should be a panel of service jawans who can actually put forth the technological demands that are needed on the live battle zone.and then surely arjun mark 2 'll be a damn playboy who 'ld fu** every damn thing in its way.

What the f++k are you talking??Even the israelies agreed that Arjun is a superb tank and can defeat their Markava mk4.They especially praised the superior gun and the 'near impenetrable' armor of Arjun mk1.And now Arjun mk2 is ready. So what was your point??
Do you meant to say that you know better than the israelly tank designers????
