Russian KavKaz 2020 strategic command-post exercise or simply called war games are set to begin next month and a contingent of Indian Armed Forces is all set to participate in the exercise.

All the bilateral and multilateral military exercises were put on hold due to the global pandemic of COVID-19 and are now starting to resume. China and Pakistan have also received invitations to participate in KavKaz 2020 as both countries are members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

The exercise will take place from September 15 to September 26 at Donguz training ranges in Russia’s Orenburg with at least 18 countries participating including China, Iran, Pakistan and Turkey apart from other Central Asian Republics part of the SCO.

As reported by FE, “a tri-service contingent with 150 Army personnel and from Air Force and Navy will be heading to Astrakhan in southern Russia for the exercise.”

The timing of the exercise is significant especially now when India-China border tensions are escalating along the Line of Actual Control in Eastern Ladakh.

In June, India and China also participated in the Victory Day Parade at Red Square in Moscow to mark the 75th anniversary of World War II. Indian Defence Minister was present there along with the Chinese counterpart.

SCO is a Eurasian political, economic, and security alliance by the founder members: China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS) is a permanent body of SCO based in Tashkent.

RATS plays a crucial role in countering terrorism and extremist forces by giving a platform to the member states of SCO to test their intelligence gathering and exchange; technology complement mechanisms.
