India has already confirmed it worked with other emerging nations to ensure there were no legally binding targets at the Copenhagen climate talks.

India's Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh earlier faced parliament for the first time since the UN talks, saying the nation had "come out quite well in Copenhagen"."We can be satisfied that we were able to get our way on this issue,"declared Mr Ramesh, who has consistently said India would be one of the countries hardest hit by climate change.

He said India, had emerged as a powerful force and said the group had protected its right to continued economic growth.

Mr Ramesh said India he would continue to work with its allies "to ensure that the interests of developing countries and India in particular are protected in the course of negotiations in 2010 and beyond".

By Gaurav Singh

Nov. 30 (Bloomberg) -- India, the world’s fourth-biggest polluter, said emission reduction offers by rich nations before next week’s climate change talks in Copenhagen are insufficient.

“If we take all the offers that are on the table at the moment, it will add up to, at the most, about 15 percent to 20 percent reduction by 2020 as compared to 1990,” Shyam Saran, special envoy of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, said in New Delhi today. The offers are “far below even the conservative 25 percent” projected by the Nobel Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, he said.

Negotiations on a climate-change accord have been stymied as richer nations and developing countries disagree on issues such as emission-reduction targets and how much financial help industrialized nations should provide to poorer ones. Pledges by China and the U.S. last week to set numerical targets for their greenhouse-gas emissions revived the hope that an agreement might be reached.

China’s cabinet said Nov. 26 it will cut output of carbon dioxide per unit of gross domestic product by 40 percent to 45 percent from 2005. :china: A day earlier, the U.S., the second-largest air polluter, said it will bring to the talks an offer to reduce emissions by about 17 percent by 2020.

India,(planned) the world’s second fastest-growing major economy, doesn’t expect a legally binding outcome at the climate negotiations in the Danish capital that run Dec. 7-18, said Saran.

Binding Caps

The South Asian nation has said it won’t accept legally binding emission caps and will keep per-capita output of carbon lower than that of rich nations. India has drawn up a National Action Plan on Climate Change, which includes increasing solar power generation, improving energy efficiency and enhancing carbon sinks, which help to absorb gases blamed for global warming.

India will seek to protect its economic interests at the talks, Saran said.

“We should not be hustled into a position that harms our economic prospects,” he said. “What we are really negotiating is how, in dealing with climate change, we preserve our various economic positions.”

India is world's fourth biggest polluter with 1,293 million tonne of carbon dioxide emission.

But with a rising population, the figures are likely to rise 3 to 5 times. The government said it is ready to cut the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted per unit of economic output -- by between 20 and 25 per cent by 2020 from the 2005 levels.

The other nations includes China, Russia and Brazil as well. Singling out India is certainly not a sign of maturity.

And how India is subotaging the future of humanity??

Wonderful..I wonder what your ally China was doing there?? :undecided: any one has any idea?? ..

Man devaloped countries destroyed half of the Ozone and they want devaloping countries like China and India to shed there growth to help them control climate change??Devaloped countries should also take some responsibility once in a while for a change

It sometimes surprises me that their is so much hatred between India and Pakistan that people from other side of border see everything in a negative light.

I mean this deal which BRIC nations are trying to get is supposed to help Pakistan too unless they have started considering themselves as a developed nation. But irony of the situation is that just to get one post of India bashing you just remove all the good that this can do for developing nations and just take the bad and dump all that on one nation - India ofcourse ignoring other nations since bashing China is a hara-kiri.

I hope most of the educated Pakistani members would not think on the same line as the OP. I mean we do have lot of differences but their are common interests that we share too and standing together for them won't cause loss of pride or be seen as a sign of defeat.

This is crazy. The international community should protest India's move. The global atmosphere is not India's personal property and therefore it has no right to deliberately pollute the environment in the name of development.

:hitwall: Sir I don't know what makes you tick but the sheer wall of hypocrisy that you are showcasing right now is amazing.

I mean China and India were few of the main countries who didn't want legally binding pollution cuts and US was more worried about China keeping its commitment since being a larger economy they produced the most damage.

Well if you are not happy with China you can express your opinion to them. As an Indian citizen I am very happy with my government handling of this issue. I am sure if you ask the Chinese government this issue removing India with China they will give you a fitting reply.

Regards

Someone please give a neutral link, the above thing seems to come from Indian media/Indian minister and we all know its always biased and involves in chest thumping, even for petty things................

Why should we drag China in this discussion? :hitwall:

China is off topic here. Please get rid of your obsession with China.

Every time, any issue of India's relation with the global community is raised, Indian members start accusing China unnecessarily. :hitwall:
:china: :pakistan: :usflag:

China is one of the beneficiaries from the agreement between BRIC and developed countries....but when it comes to India bashing.....everything is OK...Right....

Why leave china out of discussion if China is going to be benefited form the agreement and is a party to the agreement...
