India reveals details about RTA-70 regional aircraft

nice plane are there futher plans for bigger versions like the boeing 777

No buddy, we dont have the technology.... and moreover competing with boing, we dont even have a fair chance , Boing has a great reputation in this field.... It will take another 1or 2 decades for us to manufature aircrafts such as boing 777, Well after We get technology from MRTA we can have a go of passenger aircrafts with jet engines... till then this is the best. and not to forget, the MTA will also be modified into a passenger aircraft of a 100-seater capacity. It would be good though if there are international customers for that.

Who is the prime taker of this project? And Saras?

As specified, NAL is the nodal agency involved. Being a CSIR entity, all other CSIR labs should be involved in some way or the other. Even ISRO has been roped in and they would be helping with materials/ production techniques, etc!

You can get a lot of information about RTA and other NAL programs (like Saras) from this link:

NAL, Bangalore

hope this helps!

MRTA is a military transport aircraft just like the IL 76, only smaller. It will could be converted to carry troops, but is not meant as a civil passenger aircraft. Btw, there were already plans for an Indian regional civil passenger jet:

India reportedly eyeing partnership to build new RJ

India is reportedly seeking to partner either Bombardier or Embraer to build a new 70- to 100-seat regional jet.

The government has asked state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics to formulate a plan for the design and construction of an Indian regional jet, say local media reports. Assistance will be sought from Bombardier or Embraer, the reports say...

EXCLUSIVE: India's Regional Transport Aircraft (RTA-70)
...
...In 1996, then Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda (in between yawns, no doubt) said in his speech during Aero India that his government had given the scientific establishment the task of developing a 50-seater turboprop airliner and a 100-seat jet airliner. These visions changed somewhat, and the current government, in its first stint in power sanctioned the development of a 70-110 seat civilian airliner for the Indian market. While the money has already begun to flow into the programme, so far only preliminary conceptual studies have been carried out on the RTA-70 pictured above. These studies, according to NAL, include "computational fluid dynamics, wind tunnel studies and multidisciplinary design optimisation (MDO) studies".

Putin to cement Russia’s partner No. 1 status during India visit idrw.org

Under the joint MTA project, worth $600 million in developmental costs, Russia will get 100 such planes, capable of carrying a 15-20 tonne military payload, while India will take 45 of them initially. Another 60 will be sold to other countries. At a later stage, the MTA will also be modified into a passenger aircraft of a 100-seater capacity.

Hope this clarifies your doubt, thank you

Who really is going to buy this new regional aircraft that India is developing ??

The ATR series of aircraft is already a popular short ranged prop. aircraft that is widely used, even in India. And then you have newer aircraft from proven companies like Saab, like the Saab 2000 which are also propeller powered regional aircraft .

India is entering a very tough market for any International customers without any actual experience or track record in manufacturing aircraft. It's going to take a LONG time before any international airlines would be interested in buying this concept if HAL actually goes through with it.

Its obvious buddy, leading companies like Boing,Airbus and Embraer have scopes, but this would play a major role in Our VIp transport and for Armed forces and some Private Indian airlines company...

But this is cheaper than any turbo pro aircraft of its class.... so it competes in its class.....Any way this is just a start for India...

To answer your question, Indian companies and armed forces will be buying the aircraft!

So since the market is tough and there is fierce competetion, we should not try?
We need to develope technologies and abilities inhouse. Else we will get sucked into the MI complexes (aka quagmire ) of the west! :disagree:

I agree and as we see at Dhruv exports, even the low costs won't be a big benefit, because the competition is too high and our reputation too low. I think the RTA will remain with orders mainly in India and possibly some Asian, or African countries and won't enter the fight for big deals.

The demonstrator resembles an embrarer project a couple of years back.

You have to understand the Indian commercial aviation industry a little bit better, private companies have come up in good numbers just by the demand for services between the major cities. Most of them are now going international. Some asked similar questions like you did, will they survive?, they did!!!
Anyway, India will see a tremendous need to service its second and third tier cities pretty soon. The infrastructure development has already started. Unlike, bigger cities, these airports will still have smaller runways and will need regional aircraft. The Indian craft without doubt will be ordered in huge numbers just in India. A success story here will put countries like Bangladesh, Srilanka, Nepal on the list almost instantaneously!

The French ATR is without doubt a great craft. However, it does have a problem! Most of these aircraft are only flown in southern US because of it wing design, that causes Ice formation. AA pilots refused to fly it after multiple incidents, which included one fatal crash!

Anyway the point is regional aircraft have taken over most of domestic travel, we now will have sukhoi competing with CRJs, ERJs (all similar crafts). There is still more scope to break the regional crafts category, This Indian plane may fill that gap!

I completely agree!!! However one has to make a start!!! If India wasn't confident it would not invest in such a project, as I said, India and its neighbors will be the immediate audience.
