According to the 2014 International Energy Efficiency Scorecard published by American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), Germany comes in first in a energy efficiency ranking of the world's major economies, followed by Italy, the European Union as a whole, China, and France.

India, Mexico, South Korea, and Spain are new to the rankings this year. The rankings were published first time in 2013.

As per ACEEE report, while some countries are still significantly outperforming others, there are substantial opportunities for improved energy efficiency in all economies analyzed, including the US, which ranked 13th out of 16 nations, behind countries such as China, Canada, and India.

The rankings are modeled on ACEEE's time-tested approach to energy efficiency ranking of US states, and include 16 of the world's largest economies: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, South Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union. These 16 economies represent over 81% of global gross domestic product and 71% of global energy consumption.

On a scale of 100 possible points in 31 categories, the nations were ranked by ACEEE as follows:

  • 1. Germany
  • 2. Italy
  • 3. European Union
  • 4. China and France (tied)
  • 6. Japan and United Kingdom (tied)
  • 8. Spain
  • 9. Canada
  • 10. Australia
  • 11. India
  • 12. South Korea
  • 13. United States
  • 14. Russia
  • 15. Brazil
  • 16. Mexico
ACEEE divided the 31 metrics across four groupings: those that track cross-cutting aspects of energy use at the national level, as well as the three sectors primarily responsible for energy consumption in an economically developed country - buildings, industry, and transportation.

India Ranks 11th

Coming in 11th, India ranked higher than the United States and South Korea and just four points behind Australia.

India is strongest in transportation energy efficiency. It has a far lower number of passenger miles traveled per capita than any other country analyzed. Even with no fuel economy standards for passenger vehicles, India ranks third in terms of passenger-vehicle fuel economy.

More than 65% of passenger trips made in India utilize public transit, with only a moderate level of government investment in rail versus road. Less positively, India has a somewhat inefficient freight system with a high freight ton-mile per unit of economic activity.

India ranked 13th in building efficiency, earning the same score as South Korea. It established its Energy Conservation Building Code for commercial buildings in 2007, which has since been updated and made mandatory by some state governments. India also has building retrofit requirements for saving energy in the commercial buildings sector.

Hey important thing is that these 16 countries together contribute 81% of World GDP .

And Mexico's economy is bigger than that of Turks, Sauds and Indonesians.
